I have the opportunity to get an early position for a 430 and would prefer a 6 speed but it seems the market demand is for F1s. I know in my BMW M3 I would have nothing but a 6 speed versus SMG. The 6 speed seems like it would have less maintainence issues going forward and more true driver control. Or is it such that there would be little resale demand for such a car.

On the contrary, look at F1 vs. 6-speed 360s. That 10K premium is almost completely lost on resale.

Pick the one you want to drive, not the one you think the second owner will want to drive.

Having own both on a 360, I would say the gearshift would be the way to go. But Ferrari keeps making the F1 better and better. With the added HP and Tq of the 430 the F1 should work really well. In truly is a matter of taste, many people will tell you that you have more driver control with the F1. In the end buy what you like, if you really do not the the F1 you can always try and find a dealer with a gearshift car with low miles.

One issue you may face is approximately 90% of the 430 will be F1. Thus you may have to wait longer for a manual.

Like Carnut, I also owned a 360 manual and F1. My F1 was a 2004 and I absolutely loved it. If you just want concentrate on driving then there is nothing like the F1. If you want to work your feet, arms, hands and your mind(timing) then the manual would be more to your liking.

However, until you have driven the lastest F1, I would not necessarily conclude the manual is what you want.

I don't care if the F1 operated flawlessly, shifted in 0 msecs, took such good care of the clutch that it would never need replacing, cost $15K less than the stick, etc., I still wouldn't buy it!

A sports car is not a sports car without a clutch and shifter. JMO and I'm sticking to it... :)

Au contrare, the F1 tranny DOES have a clutch and a shifter, you just have to re-educate your left left and your right hand to adapt ;)
But seriously, I hear what you're saying, and I pray I won't miss rowing, throttle blipping, and rev matching "manually".

Not an F1-or-6-speed debate again... this could get ugly.

Go with the manual because it seems that you prefer it. Forget about the other factors.

Absolutely go with what you like. The F430 is going to be in such high demand for the first 18 months to 2 years that it will not be an issue on what transmission your car has. Personally I have driven both and to me there is nothing like driving a manual F-car.

the older you get, the more adverse you become to change. A sports car should be at the cutting edge of technology. I am noyt saying a gearbox is bad, but you have to admit, F1 boxes enable you to drive a car faster.

On resale, the sticks take way longer to sell. I like them myself but you need to find the one person in 10 that wants a stick.

Wow! That's the first picture of a 430 stick that I've seen! And it sucks! I really need to pay closer attention from now on. :-|

I told FoS I wanted my 430s (coupe and spider) in stick. The stick in the picture looks so bad that I'll probably change back to F1. It's that bad looking for me. I had just assumed they would carry over the smooth 360 type of console when providing the stick. I really now need to think about this. I love the stick, but I don't want to hate the look every time I drive.

sparetireless is wrong. I know for a fact our local dealer is trying to get 360 w/sticks. Why? Because they sell quicker! And for the same money.

In my own case, I am 14th overall locally for a 430, but since I first for a stick, I am told I will get one of the 1st ten. So, it is hard to say which model might come quicker.

    Get what you want.

    Hey Tim -

I can't explain why, but it looks fine in person. I went through the same thought process when I saw the photo, but then I saw it in person and changed back again. I've got a July production 6-spd (a 2006 model year).

YMMV of course, but I thought it was perfectly acceptable.

Hmmm... I guess I should follow my own advice (with the charcoal vs black interior) and see it in person instead of jumping to conclusions. Thx - Tim

Remember the F1 gearbox also interactrs with the e-diff.

Reports from dealers say that the manual does not have that ability so the handling is nowhere near as clean.
