This review was on tonights Top Gear program http://www.sleepy-fish.com/other_veh.htm click on the review Top Gear - Porsche GT3 RS vs. Ferrari 360CS It is very good
If you pay close attention to the lap time board you will see that both cars beat the Murcielago by 1.4 seconds and the Gallardo by 3.5 seconds at the track.
Unbelievable video. You gotta hand it to the boys at Top Gear. Phenomenal shots, and hilarious commentary. I really enjoy watching them. Best quote: "I shall ignore the price difference. And I shall also ignore my prejudices. You see, I think a Ferrari is scaled down version of...God. And a Porsche 911, a jumped up Volkswagon Beetle. All I'm interested in here is which is the best piece of engineering." Thanks for posting bumboola.
Yeah, noticed that too....Great video clip. Got goosebumps hearing the sound of the 360CS making its turns... Must confess...after the reviewing the video, went out to the garage, took a look at my new 360 and gently caressed her body from top to bottom....It's love all over again, man...
Wow, my expectations was to hear him say that the F1 sucks - but he did'nt to my surprise. It is a very special car.
Wow that was really cool, I got the goosebumps listening to that 360CS. The guy sure looked like he enjoyed it! It was like he was a little kid at christmas agian!
Excellent footage. The 911 was very impressive, even the sound, I must admit. It sounds much better than the standard 911s. Too bad it's not equally comfortable and adept on the road. The CS spoke for itself. But the most interesting piece was the both cars beat the Murci and the Zonda by a second. It's interesting that no one has posted those numbers.... Forza, Cavallini They need to test the Gallardo.
What a video! Good review of both by Clarkson. (I usually think he picks faults with the stupidest things, but this time I actually valued what he had to say.) Yes, those lap times are AMAZING. Look at what they beat.
Thats very funny but then when the 360 goes racing against the GT3s at the real races then God takes shape as a jumped up Volkswagon Beetle and the 360 is a scale down evangelist.
Yeah, I'm sure, because at "real races" the GT3's lap times suddenly get much faster that the 360's? riiiiiight
This program "Top Gear" seems awesome. Any station in the US brodcast it??? How often is it shown in the UK?
What??? Hey buddy, I think you missed the point!! They are not comparing the racing cars but the street versions of these cars... which have completely different objectives!! The believe point is which of the two production cars are the best at handeling, quickest, best braking, nicest sounding, and has the best lines but, can also be driven well on the roads we all drive on!! The Stradale did very well considering it rides much better then the GT RS on the road. Regarding your point on Ferrari's lack of wins in GT racing. My friends run a team that won the 24 Le Mans this year in the GT class with their GT3. Here are some of the reasons he gave me on why they run a Porsche. The top teams in GT racing are using the GT3 for many reasons. 1. The GT3 was been developed for this type of racing for many more years and the Ferrari's. The 360 Challenge is an owners only race where the cars are to be left stock. 2. The development of the GT3 from the factory for its top racing teams is at a point where it is more economical to start with a GT3 than the 360 out of the box. 3. The GT3 development is also factory backed, which is a huge help!! 4. In his level of racing money is also tight and the Porsche is cheaper to run and supply parts for than the Ferrari's. 5. The best Porsche teams hire the best drivers...also a big factor. 6. Due to the reasons above there are very few Ferrari's even running at this level so the odds are even less that they would place well when there are 20 more Porsches running the same race. PS Enjoy your lovely green salade
The point about racing is winning, the GT3s deliver the goods at the days end, in other words if the GT3 is doing it better and cheaper then who is the winner. I know of the 360 Challenge, but there are as you know races where this two meet and the GT3s are winning, it may be for many reasons like there are more GT3s than 360s as you say, but if a few of those 360s were faster or had better reliability then those 360s would come ahead but they don't, sorry the GT3s are better cars at the end of the story and thats why so many people are choosing them. I think your friends chose the GT3 because the new that they had better chances with this car than the 360 and that proves even more the point of it. A GT3RS for $100,000 less than the Ferrari and with that performance its a winner in the street as much as in a $checkbook. I am a big Ferrari fan and owner but also drive a 996turbo, I like both marks. As above so below just dont hurt yourself.
I was at the filming of that edition last wednesday, and right at the end Clarkson did voice over introductions for different parts of the world. It goes everywhere EXCEPT the US. It's on every Sunday evening in the UK, and this was the best bit of it. In fact if you look at the other videos on Steve's site (sleepyfish) you will see the best bits from other programs too, including testing of the SLR. I wouldn't get too excited about the lap times, other than a direct comparison of the GT3RS with the CS- received wisdom says the lap times are getting faster because of a better Stig/changes to the circuit. It's meant to be a bit of fun. Kevin
What on earth are you talking about? There are no races where the street versions of the 360CS and the GT3 meet. These are the cars that this review is about. Very very expensive, modified cars are entered into races by an aftermarket company like Michelotto. These cars are NOT 360CSs and they are NOT street legal. You are basing your analysis of the GT3 and CS on these race cars with countless modifications from tuners? This reasoning is flawed for several reasons. First, as I have already indicated, you rely heavily on these race cars' results in order to discuss how the road cars perform (when, clearly, we have a test OF THE ROAD CARS that shows their identical performance. Second, after relying on this RACING history, you start talking about the GT3 costing $100,000: yet again mixing apples and oranges in your analysis. Tell me how much a racing version of the GT3 costs. You have no idea. Tell me how much a Michelotto 360 costs. You have no idea. For all we know, the racing GT3 costs more than the racing 360. The point is that you can't talk about these racing cars, then start talking about the road cars' stats as though the two are interchangeable. They aren't, by any means. This review was of the ROAD CARS: like, the ones you and I can actually drive. And, if you actually watched the review, you will see that Clarkson liked the CS better as a road car: namely, it was more comfortable and inspired more passion. If you want to buy a GT3 because some modded race version beat a 360 Michelotto, then more power to you. Heaven knows many people are attracted by Ferrari's F1 championships. But the fact remains that it puts out identical figures to the CS, and, according to THIS reviewer (if not many others), leaves the driver with a bigger smile on his face. After all, it's that smile for which we buy road cars. You may truly believe your statement, "sorry the GT3s are better cars at the end of the story," but nothing in this review or any other reviews I have read suggests such a statement. Does the thought of the FIA GT Championship series make you go weak in the knees? If so, by all means, drive your GT3 around town while being shaken by every bump in the road and imagine you are really flying around Magny Cours. For everyone else, we'll be focusing on how exciting the cars are to drive.
I think you really can't compare the two- Ferrari is so focused on F1 and Porsche is focused on the Le Mans and other race series. It's too bad that they aren't competing in the same series with official support, that would make for some interesting racing!
Testa... It's really too bad for the GT3 RS is not available in North America. I too am a big Ferrari fan...always have been... but I also respect and own a Porsche's as well. I have a 996tt modified too 600 HP and 600 lbs torq. Evo stage 4!! I have a full coil-over installed, GT2 turbo's, headers, GT3 seats and removed about 140 lbs of weight off the turbo. My car weighs around 3340 lbs This car is the fastest road car I have ever driven both on the track and the street. ....But, I am going to lunch with my wife and I am taking the Stradale. Then I am going to dinner with friends tonight and I am taking the Stradale. I am taking it because I can not wait to hear that exhaust, look at the beautiful lines of this car, the smell of the suede etc. I love driving the Ferrari very slowly and also very quickly. Hell I just love sitting in it!!! I truly respect my Porsche but I love my Ferrari
