Talking BB512i service

As I have posted earlier, my Boxer is at Ferrari of Atlanta undergoing a major service at this time. I have also had my headers ceramic coated and ordered a new Bell SS silencer just for fun. A full interior, exterior and chassis detail will be done to get her looking like new again. A leak down test was done, and per Wade, the engine is in great shape. For good measure, I went ahead and had the valve stem seals replaced to prevent any future start-up smoke issue. While servicing my CV joints, Wade noted that the outer and inner races were shot and I will go ahead and replace all four of them as well. With these old cars, you never know what will turn up next. I can't wait to get her back for some Fall mountain driving!

Just curious, what is the addition cost for replacing the valve seal?

Thanks,
David

Lightbulb

Per Wade at FoA, my valve stem seals were shot. He replaced them with modern rubber impregnated ones which seal better and last longer than the OEM Teflon ones. So it does seem to be a good idea to have them replaced as part of a major service...

I'm curious too as mine's due as well.
It would be interesting to see the difference in rate between Atlanta and San Diego.
I think the rate at Bobileff in San Diego is something around $120/125 per hour.

Thanks for the info on the valve seals!

John

FoA posted labor rate is $135/hour...they do give a 10% discount on parts and labor to FCA members...and, they will negotiate...

My my, Bobileff rates have gone up since I bought my BBi there in 2000, when the rate was $75 per hour. The San Diego market was much less expensive compared to northern California, according to Gary. When I bought the car and returned to the Bay Area, Dayal Dindral of Prancing Horse (Burlingame) was charging $95/hr but soon raised it to $105 and then on up.

I think the high end in NorCal is $135 or even an outrageous $150 at FoSF.

Johannes (owner) of Dino Motors in San Mateo charges about $110 an hour but then takes more time in doing the work. The major he did in June of 2008 was around $9K i think. (I had other stuff done besides the major.)

As my Boxer is being put back together a few extras have came up...I need new header studs/nuts and the distributor needs to be cleaned and re-lubed...so far I am very pleased with the minimum amount of extra work/parts that have been needed...I can't want to get her back on the road and hear her sing with my new Bell silencer...

Wade got called away to Jackson, Ms. for a few days to work on some of the owner of FoA cars, so my BB512i service got put on hold...which is fine as I'm going dirt bike riding this weekend anyway. I am missing driving the old Fiat though...

I picked up the Boxer from FoA at 5pm on Friday and cautiously drove her home in rush hour traffic in the rain. The car drove and sounded great with the new Bell silencer. However, on Sunday when I was able to drive her in a more aggressive manner, I noted that the clutch slipped when I ran through the gears hard shifting at or near red line. I am hoping it is just an adjustment of some sort as the clutch had not been slipping before. The clutch was last replaced ~ 15k klms ago in December 2002. I plan to drop it back by FoA on Wednesday for resolution...

Did you get your clutch squared away? You will have to post a video/audio of the new exhaust at full song!

How the heck are they replacing the stem seals without removing the heads? Wont a valve drop once the keeper is removed in getting to the stem seal??

You hook the shop airline to the plughole and presto the valves cant fall or move. You could hit one with a mallet and it would only get forced closed by the compressed air inside.

I would ask to have the distributor pulled.

Have them check and see, if it is working and set to the factory specs.

At this time, the cams and springs inside of the distributor, are often no longer working properly. If the distributor is no longer within specs, the car will not produce it's advertised power.

As it turns out the old Fiat needs a clutch. I ordered an AP Racing "clutch kit" from TRutlands which should be here in about 10 days...

Now, you're the attorney, well versed in this type of A vs B argument, but can you connect the dots between this...

A new, formerly unneeded clutch, after 9k miles? (This is your conscience thinking.) Just checking on you.
