I drag my kids to the local Goodwill about once a month to add to my collection of books that I plan to read "some day", though they usually see several seasons of dust before I turn a page (if ever). Last weekend my oldest son found a copy of "Formula One" by Bob Judd, which via a quote on the cover Jackie Stewart describes as "Formula One is ****** Francis on wheels". If interested, I found this about Mr. Francis: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dick_Francis. I'd describe the story as John Grisham re-writes the movie Grand Prix.

I managed to start and finish the book over the long Memorial Day weekend and appropriately there is a chapter that focuses on Monaco. Its a good, quick read and touches on some of the technical aspects of the sport (period is late 80s) just enough to keep that part interesting without getting too detailed.

Below is a pic of the cover and my bookmark is to the right. I came across this link for the soft-cover edition and the cover car is clearly a Ferrari: http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/j/bob-judd/formula-one.htm

Anyone read this book or any of Judd's other efforts?

I read it and enjoyed it when it came out (journey into distant memories also reveals that I bought it thinking he might have been related to the engine builder) - not read any of his others though. :)

I read one of his books years ago, but I don't think it was this one. I vaguely remember being fairly unimpressed.

I forgot about Judd, any connection?

Here is a list of his other books: http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/j/bob-judd/

I'm thinking about getting another one or two to see if its the same old story, different locale.

Anyone have any recommendations for racing based fiction books?

I read it, it was ok, nothing great. Only the part of taking out a Boxer in Italy and giving it a go, was a nice touch. The guy is more of a Soap Opera type writer.
