Have been driving for a while now and noticed a noise when the car is idle in "P"ark mode (thought it was exhaust rattle). It sounds like a bearing - have had it checked by an indie and confirm it is not front, rear or torque tube bearings. I am advised the noise appears to be near gearbox/ split diff box and not the engine. Has anyone had experience of this - not sure if it is a problem or a common sound on the 456 - other forums suggest a possible bearing but not an uncomon noise. It is not a scraping noise, or a thud etc, just a sort of worn bearing/ slight coughing noise that then disappears when in "D"rive. Any thoughts? If it is near the auto-gearbox, any recommendations on a second view expert to see around the M25 area. Thanks

Aamir - you have further thoughts on this?

You sound like an Autotrans, me a 6 speed. so, not entirely sure, you'll have to PM rifledriver.

MY SOUND is the same, sounds like either low fluid, or a sort of bearing going out: Believe me you want the latter and not the former.

First, check the fluid in the rear tranny area: you'll need to jack up the car, and at the very rear, insert a socket, unscrew, and check the imbedded dipstick:
Should be full and clear. IF NOT, you need to replace with standard autotrans gear oil 75-90 RIGHT away!!.

I have just ran into this problem/noise this last two days and getting ready to ship it off to Rifledriver for both clutch bearings and possible [probable] new clutch, as I don't want to mess with another clutch year or two down the road: Then again, if good to go, might not.

My 'noise' sounded horrible and the shifting became a problem, especially in the higher 5/6 gear.
BUT at idle, or slightest touch to clutch ped. it would make that sound.

Hoisted the car up on lift, and checked the rear trans oil and it was clear and full.

Jacked the rear, lifting rear tires off lift, and had wife [ heck, she turns a mean wrench and I have insurance :) :) ] start car and engage in 1st. SOUND was front, near clutch area.

Brian seems to feel throwout bearing and we'll replace both, and possible clutch.
