It's always wise to have a spare card, just like a battery(ies). As mentioned above, you don't want to start deleting images or even start worrying about the card filling up, and what happens if it stops working? It's definitely advised. :)

I have my eye on the new D200. I saw it the other day and its awesome. I'm thinking about trading in my D70 body for it. I'll still have to pay quite a bit for it though :(

On a side note, i took over 1200 pictures at this years Rolex Vintage Festival at Lime Rock. 2 day event.

Sorry I don't visit Off-topic that often. It looks like all your questions have been answered so far. I always take pictures at full size and resize them if I post them online. Your camera must be at least 9MP!! That is VERY impressive. My camera is 8MP and I can usually get 1,200 pics on my 3GB card. So peoples estimate of 600 pics on a 1GB card might be a bit high and it is realistically around 4-500. I would just buy another 1GB card as a backup and make sure you always have extra batteries!! Especially if your camera uses the LCD screen a lot. That will suck the life right out of the batteries. Anyways I'm appreciate you mentioning my name when it comes to photography advice. It is very flattering. If you have any more questions for me feel free to PM me since I check off-topic maybe once a week.

And remember, the higher ISO, the bigger file size therefore fewer images on the card.

Yeah that was a typo, sorry about that.

Just while were on the subject, what does everyone think of the Olympus SP-320? I got it at a reasonable price and I think it's good value for money. I didn't want to get anything too expensive because I'm only a beginner. Maybe when I get better I might go for something like the Digital Rebel XT but for now I think the SP-320 is all I need.

Can you guys let me know what you think of the camera because I'm really interested in hearing everyones opinions, good or bad.

    Thanks

^If you want to weigh some more options, I have a 1 gig card with my XT and it only holds 256 pictures. It's 8.x MP I think.

I have two 2gb cards for my D70 and on full res "fine" i can get about 600 pics per card. I never use raw. My desktop (400mhz) couldn't handle it and i don't edit my pics much.

EDIT: I have two 2gb cards, not 1gb as i said before

Do you guys use PS to resize pictures? Does it keep the images from having thoes staggered straight lines because it was resized so much smaller?

Woah, is that even real!?! LOL! :p How much ram does it have, though? I used to use a computer up until around 2001 that had 66mhz, no joke, what a pos.

My bad, I have a 512 MB card, not a 256, and I can fit 600 pictures on it. That means you would be able to fit about 400 or whatever on yours.

I think 370-400 will be enough for me because I'll be transferring the pictures to my laptop every night. I don't think I would take over 400 pics in one day.

Just wondering, does anyone use RAW?

Also could someone please tell me again what ISO stands for?

Thanks for the advice from everyone.

Alright guys, today I took some pics with the XT and I compressed them with Paint so I could host them on Imageshack. Before showing the pics, I'd like to give Simon a BIG thanks for giving me a ride in his F40. We went down to Ferrari of Central Florida to watch the F1 race. Everyone there was great, nice people at FoCF! More people showed up than I expected due to the weather, but everything was great. The F40 is an amazing car. The experience was like nothing else I've ever had. He didn't even give it full throttle and I was being pushed back VERY hard. It was an awesome day!

P.S. The F40's a/c is really good. It was in the 90s today and the a/c was really cold, colder than my car!

I use photoshop yes! And it does not destroy the photos at all if you have your settings right :)
If I remember correct (PS is shut down right now)... you'll have to put the settings to BICUBIC in resize. Then you'll not get those staggered lines.

I use a free program called photoFiltre. If you check on "Optimize" and "Preserve Aspect Ratio" everything should be all gravy. You can download it for free here. http://www.photofiltre.com/

I have a Nikon 5700 used mostly for work. If you look at my racing pics you can tell I have not read the manual. I want to upgrade to a dig SLR. I see Texas Mike has a D50 and Sefac has a D70. Advantages/differences? If I spend this kind of $ I will read the manual.

I love my D70. I've felt the Drebel (Digi Rebel XT) and it feels small to me. In the end, if you're looking at either D50/D70 vs. Rebel it'll come down to personal choice. The cameras are almost identical in specs (except megapixels which doesn't make a big difference).

If you can afford a D70 then get it. I couldn't....
Also keep in mind other things you will need. A good flash for a Nikon costs about $250 and each lens can cost more than the actual camera. Make sure you have a good bag to protect your camera and make sure you get all the proper tools to clean your lenses. Good polarizer filters which some of us use can cost $80 or $90 each. I have one of each kind of filter for each of my lenses so I don't have to trade them out.

    I assume you mean D70?

A polarizer isn't a necessity. I've yet to use it since i over-saturated tons of pics with it. Sure its great sometimes but none of the pros use them. There was a thread on automotivephoto about the use of them but ap is down so i can't link it. A good flash would be nice too. I want the SB600. I want a tripod more than a flash though and a good head to go on that. You can spend big $$ in a short amount of time with photography. It can be a very expensive hobby. Still, i love it :)

I have an SB600, it's great! I wouldn't go so far as to say no pros use polarizers. Many do... If you are shooting through a windshield it will cut out all the glare. For certain uses like that, it's invaluable.

Yeah, some pros use them in some situations. I shouldn't have said none use them. I have one and use it for wildlife as well. You need certain conditions for it to work as well. But i'd recomend a flash/tripod before a polarizing filter.
