http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showpost.php?p=3568220&postcount=5 Still ugly, but better then the current 7 that is for sure.
Why can't Bangle admit the tail is wrong and fix it? Inside is very pretty, excepting the I-drive madness.
Bangle is still stuck with that "I'm not wrong, everybody else is!" idea. The new model looks to be a slight improvement in the front... but that rear end has really got to go.
Looks better IMO. I don't see why everyone hates the IDrive, I have had no trouble using it at all after a few hours in the car. Didn't even have to look after a few more days. It's really not that complicated.
OK. Say you need to do 2 things: Turn the volume up on your radio and increase the fan speed on the A/C. I'm my 1989 Toyota truck. I twist one knob, then twist another all in 2 seconds tops WITHOUT taking my eyes off the road. Tell me the steps in doing these 2 tasks with the I-drive. Does it take 2 seconds? Did technology make your life better and easier? Should not technological improvements...improve life?
I had this all last week the 12 is amazing the car works and drives exceptionally well. 2000 rpm in 6 is 85 mph and the dark color really did wonders. The 7 look has grown on me. I have bangle's cell # around here... humm... (my pictures) Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
The I DRIVE is a mess, too many menues even on the "dumbed down" version... it is the menu menu menu fan menu menu radio the Voice regognition system was a bit of a giggle tho... A friend of mine was rather infatuated with that and pushed the speach button "I would like a Blow Yob..." he states "Pardon Me?" says the car Just like real life...

Im going on my 3rd 7 and I miss my 2000 740il I started with. I miss the length and back seat, but I still look forward to my new one with the new style in June. I still find no reason to spend thousands more to own an S class, BMWs still handle better, especially with the Z rated tires. I used the diifference in price to buy my new spider. I hate MBZ. MM
I think the larger size and more rounded lines used on the lights and door handles gives the 7 a more attractive appearance than the 5. This new 7 looks a little better, but the 360hp engine mated with the sport package will really make the improvement. They're not as inspiring to look at as the E38, but they sure do drive and handle well. I've never messed with the I-drive, so I don't know how easy it would be to learn. The 7 short wheelbase is also a great alternative for those who want a "sporty" sedan with room, and don't want to pony up for an E55, nor get the softer E500, Jag, etc., and don't like the 5's styling.
Try to do something as simple as cancel route guidance on navigation, then tell me that i drive isn't overly complicated.
Now drive an S600L for a week. The MB handles better, is better balanced, much more nimble and performance in a totally different league. IMO 760 is a total waste, the 745Li is a better drivers car and much cheaper to boot.
I drove the 7 I guess a little over a year ago for 3 weeks. I don't know, I picked it up pretty quick, I have an easy time memorizing things though, so the menues were in my head, I rarely had to look at the screen. I thought it was an improvement. I didn't have to reach forward, it was all under my hand which is resting there normally. I do wish they would offer their cars with I-Drive being an option though. As for UroTrash's example, I remember when I taught my dad how to use a computer back in the late 80's and he thought it was stupid because he could write faster than he could type. I cannot recall a time I have been in a rush to turn the radio down or speed up a fan. Different strokes I suppose.
my thoughts exactly! but regarding the new 7 - looks good, back to basics of a classy BMW. the i-drive looks even more... well, is that an LCD i-drive display? sorry I didn't read into detail too much.
I think it is an important philosophical point. About 10 years ago, they replaced an operating table at work. The old one had a foot pedal that you placed your foot in the center of . If you wanted the table to move left, you moved your foot left. If you wanted it to move right, you moved your foot right. Easy and instant. They replaced it with a very modern table that had a left-right toggle that chose a number of menus on a display to your left. You took your eye off the scope, toggled to the right selection, tapped "select" the choice from a menu. After 6 months you could do it in about 20 seconds. Many procedures required 100 or 200 maneuvers. That machine was replaced with the updated model, that guess what ? Has the old style toggle. They quit making the "new" one as it was recognized as bad technology. I think the absolute test of technology is if it make things quicker and easier. If it adds time, even after you are accustomed to it, it is BAD technology. The engineers should be ashamed. Your somewhat condescending comparison to using a computer is not valid. A computer should make a lot of things quicker and easier. I don't see that the I-Drive makes any thing quicker or easier.
Point taken. I didn't mean to come across condescending, rather to show that with time it becomes as fast or more convinient.Certainly there are some series of functions that take a moment or two longer, but, I find the convinience is greater. Again, it's different for everyone, I got pretty quick with it after a few days.
I think you've made an excellent point. Computers are great for many things. Opening a can of soup ain't one of them.
haha, if I could get a computer to open a can of soup for me, I would be all over it!! My can opener is garbage.
Back to the styling for a moment, I think this is a good improvement. As awkward as the trunk is, the thing that really bothered me about the 7 was the front end, and they have done a decent job cleaning it up. This version looks lighter and more aggressive, but it is still not the car it should have been.
Isn't it a shame, that the words to describe a $80,000-100,000 car include "awkward" and "decent job" rather than "Wow!" and "breath-taking"?
