Yes, the car did race, as you can see from the link that Seb posted. If you're seriously interested in this car and the other 250 GT Zagatos, I suggest you pick up a copy of Ferrari by Zagato by Michele Marchiano. It covers every Zagato-bodied Ferrari in detail and is full of period photographs and documents. There are ten pages just on 0537GT alone.

Patrick, let me translate this for you...

Go to Borders, find the book, sit down with a soda, read those ten pages - hell, take pictures of them - then put the book back and go home... :D

I imported 0537GT 3-61 from Rome. At that time, it had been repainted once, but still had its orig. interior (light blue, not as restored). I sold it in early '62 (not that easy to sell Fazzaz inthose days!) but had a gullwing in trade!

It later went underground, but was a literal "barn find" by Cyrus Nassiry years later.

0537 had a good race history, but somewhat confused with 0515GT (which I had also imported!) due to mislabeling in a Ferrari Annual, and subsequent confusion in Jess Pourret's book.

The rest, as noted, is in the Zagato book. Ed Niles

Just got back from Paris, where I visited 2 automobila shops. The Zagato Ferrari book is way out of print, and the one copy I found for sale there was 125 Euros; nearly $200...of course everything is expensive in Paris...restaurants, for example, are about double the cost of Los Angeles for the same quality meal...

As soon as the welcoming seremonies are over, I'd like to go back to the Zagatos.

In the Zagato book (p. 68-71) there is a series of pictures from claimed "Coppa San Ambroeus, Monza 1956". As far as I know no such race was ever arranged.

As the picture includes 1 early TdF (#170) + 2 14 louver cars (#172, #174), this must be a race arranged during 1957 season. Really annoying I can't dentify any of these cars reliably. What race could this be? 250 GT Zagato 0515GT was there too (#168).

    Best wishes, Kare

    Kare:

The San Ambroeus Cup was a race held by that famous club, at the Monza track. It was similar to the Coppa Intereuropa.

I believe that you are correct in that it was 1957 rather than 1956 that the photos are from.

Kare, as far as I am able to ascertain, the "Coppa Sant Ambroeus" was held at Monza from as early as 1951 and continued to take place until as late as 1961. Since Galluzzi sold 0515GT in early 1957, and he is clearly seen standing ouside the car before the race on pg 70, I don't doubt that this photo was taken at Monza in October 1956 as the author states.

Unfortunately I cannot trace by a note I have that claims that the 1956 edition of Coppa San Ambroeus was never arranged. I would also like to hear how do you explain two 14 louver Berlinettas in this picture! The third Scaglietti has a large rear window and is clearly a 1956 car. It is a mystery car that has never been identified so that I would know (0507GT? 0539GT?)

#174 clearly is 0647GT (compare to photo on page 76: note the painted tringle on roof in particular). 0647GT was delivered as a new car in early March of 1957!!! Don't have build sheets but think that by end of 1956 it was still a bare chassis on factory floor.

Cannot identify #172. Could be almost any of these cars or even 0296AM. Have very limited collection of early Tour de France photos missing some of the cars completely.

    Best wishes, Kare

So this is the pic we are talking about. I do understand your scepsis Kare. There are a view points I also don't understand:
    - the 14 louver cars I tend to recognize
    - Elio Zagato entering a race where in his autobiography he explains he didn't
race in 1956 because of recovering from a 14-fracture accident he had in
    1955.
    - The Pourret book has is all wrong as far as 0515GT and 0537GT are
    concerned
    - I have a correction on the Pourret book where Galuzzi did take part in the
1956 Coppa Sant Ambroeus race under no.168 finishing second.
    - 0515GT was sold on February 22 1957 to the Ecurie Sant Ambroeus

So who knows the right answers?

Okay, so we have here in a single race, a car that was not completed until 1957 and an owner with his car that he sold in early 1957 as well. Photos appear to have been taken at Monza. Could this be the Trofeo Vigorelli, which I have as taking place at Monza in early 1957?
