Do your homework and buy the best you can buy. CKeck history is the most important with all the service records, dealer or independant doesnt matter. My 86TR has been a dream with 50K on the clock and still strong as an ox. Its alittle more expensive to maintain than other f cars, but worth all its pennies. Its my first, not my last....good luck in your find !!

violent agreement with the other posters. it's so important to not jump at the first car you see and do your learning, get an education (this site and elsewhere) and make sure you research each beast.

but go into it with your eyes wide open. these cars are fickle, will require work, and will cost you money. if you can do all the mechanicals and diagnostic work yourself, you can probably get by on $500 to $1000 a year in parts (averaged across five years - including a major every five years).

    education first. car second :)

    g/l!

Have the car inspected before you buy & buy the nicest car you can afford. You do NOT want to pay for parts to restore 1 of these cars, even if you do all the labor yourself the prices for parts are high

Get a 512TR if you can stretch a few more $

I owned a perfect condition 88 Testarossa for 4 1/2 years and did all the maintenance by the book, bought it with 5,000 miles and drove it to 38,000 miles and it cost me almost $30,000 to keep it in mint codition and to drive it almost daily, a good example commands big money to run and a bad one will brake your pocket. Be carefull and think ahead when it comes to the RedHead.

the transmission & input shaft are the weak link in the TR, Tough to know if its been abused but drive the car & ensure that the trans works well

Its normal for the trans to feel very stiff & difficult to get into 2nd gear when its cold
