I am in the process of selling my 355 and buying a Gallardo. I had a resonable p/x quote offered (purely for convenience since my car is up for sale) but the dealer has just reduced the offer by £1500 so that he can have the car serviced by a main dealer since he thinks my cam belt service by Rardley is worthless - anyone else come across this?

I had a PPI and service when I bought the car earlier this year and Spent £4k on that and there was never a mention of a problem with having non main dealer belt services.

I am not convinced he will use the reduction in value to have the job done since my car having only covered 16K miles is serviced to the hilt! (including two cam belt services). I am told by the dealer that he considers a cambelt service by a non-main dealer worthless.

The dealer's just trying it on, a camblet service from a known specialist shouldnt be treated any differently than a service at a main dealer

My sentiments also - after all the guys who did it were trained by Ferrari and followed ferrari procedures and used ferrari parts!

Felix, Andrews' hit the nail on the head, all the guy wants to do is have the book stamped by a main dealer if he bothers at all,
Felix tell the dealer not to criticize anyones work till he's done his research on the said persons you had do the work, then ask for £2000 extra for your car,

    Dale.

It would be interesting to know whether this dealer (who reduced his offer) does cambelt services himself. If he doesn't do servicing, I wouldn't call him a real 'dealer' anyway - he offers sales but no aftersales. If he does do servicing, then it's a little hypocritical...

Felix - are you interested in swapping the seats with a cash adjustment ?

Saw your advert on Pistonheads and thought it was a very good price - surely you can get more than a p/ex price for it ?

sorry Rick - these seats are an intrinsic part of the car and since it left the factory that way - I think it should stay that way. Have been offered a resonable p/x but dealer reduced offer at eleventh hour citing the above excuse. Have a number of private offers now and would prefer this route but my new car arrival is earlier than I anticipated and I need to complete on a sale by Thursday afternoon - with PPIs etc this is going to make it difficult - I could postpone picking up the Gallardo but I don't really want to if I can avoid it.

Sounds like total bollox to me. So long as it is a respected outfit (as Rardley is) it makes absolutely no difference. Sounds like the dealer is trying it on.

I'd get very shirty if I was you.

It is bull and they try it on

I have one of the top specialists do my belt service and one regular normal service. When I was pricing mine up as a poss trade in against a Murcielago they had not only was the price low to start with then they lowered it by another 2.5k - when I asked why they said

that is what it will cost us to carry out belt service again here

so a main dealer charges himself 2.5 k as well as the customer - err...no...

spot = pisstake....fortunately for me I decided to stick with what i ahve as she is lovely...keeping the car too

I thought 47k for a 1998 spider in mint condition albeit with 25k at the time was a huge pisstake...you just know that would have been on their webpage for 58k plus.....

If i ever get another car it will be in addition too the 355 .. cant sell her now...just upgraded things that needed doing IMHO and now i will elave her alone....

errr.....in short yes - they all try it on.... and they are all crying out for 355's - take a look - there are far more 360's on average for sale than 355 GTS/ SPiders.......a fair trade in value is expoected by me when they are not really taking on any risk.....they sell the newer car to you at some silly mark up adn then try and screw you on yours too.....better off buying the new one outright to get a better deal adn selling yours privately....with these sort of numbers it makes sense..can save yourself over 10k when you really look into it

    my two pennies worth over...

Keep having discussions with him until your Gallardo's sat taking space at his garage. I very much doubt it'll disappear from his lot overnight as there are quite a few for sale at the moment (you could even tell him to stick it and you'll go and buy from elsewhere where you'll get a more sensible approach).

And don't let your heart get in the way of common sense. Tell him if he's backing out at the 11th hour, he'll have to wait for the remainder of his cash and he can wait to register your car.

I think that is just sharp practice. See if you can find a Gallardo elsewhere and tell him to stick it where the sun dont shine!

I was initially worried when I first saw this posting come up but have taken heart from the responses. I'm having belts done on my 550 at Verdi this week. I've never used them before but on the basis of feedback on this site and visiting them I feel pretty confident in trusting them with my baby.

I'm not planning on selling in the foreseeable and had never considered the resale consequences but it does sound like restrictive practise on the part of dealers to me.
