I was told I have a shift shaft seal leakage. When I drive it and then park sometimes smoke comes from the front of the engine between the engine and firewall. Does the shift shaft leak hit the exhaust? This problem is worse on hot days. How difficult / expensive is it to fix? Is there a chance of fire/significant damage? Thanks.

I think this one is a bit hard to believe as the source of your smoke.

I am replacing the shift shaft seals in my car right now. It is not hard just a big PITA and not THAT expensive (about <$150.00) for a DITY kind of guy.

The only place the shift linkage "breaks" the oil and tranny cans AND is exposed to the outside environment is in the front of the oil can. I would think you'd have to have a he11 of a leak to get enough oil coming out of the oil can to produce the situation you describe. IIRC, the front exhaust header/pipe is higher up within the car than the "break" in the front of the oil can so oil getting up there is a bit unlikely. I would think youd have a good puddle of oil on the ground after letting it sit for a few hours/days too.

I am guessing it might be something more serious.

Any of you older hands out there want to chime in as I could be wrong, but don't think so ...... :(

The shift shaft seal is way below the exhaust, can't smoke from there. If there is an leak that can smoke, it is likely from valve covers.

if oil oil is hitting ur exhaust leak is some where else cam maybe cover covers ..... if you wanna replace shifter seal and have a bit of mechanical no how this is not a hard job.. easy way is.... you need to unbolt the knuckle at the shifter linkage and remove the adjusting rod in front of the s/shaft rubber boot....picture 2 remove gearbox cover ( watch for the ball bearings and springs when you remove g/box cover) unbolt the 4 nuts that hold sel/forks in place then the bolt on selector fork thats attached to the shift shaft inside g/box then slide the little bleeder out the back the seal is located in first picture marked with yell circle you should be able to get to it from g/box side with a seal pick or strong bit of wire make a hook on the end of it ..... a good seal supply shop should be able to match it up for you if they have the in viton even better now the tricky bit this is where ur little finger comes in handy when fitting the new seal you dont wanna push it to far or to hard gently dos it you will end up pushing the new seal past the seal seat into the engine sump if you going to tackle this job and want anymore pics my eng/g/box are in pieces only happy to help good luck
