Well, today I decided to tackle my shifter assembly and to replace the shift linkage bushing with the Delrin bushing that I purchased last year from Verell.
The center console of the GT4 requires removal of the front seats to get out as it is a PITA to get up and over the shifter and the emergency brake. First you have to remove the seatbelt anchors, and then the several little screws holding the console to the floor. Then very carefully, lift up on the whole piece and begin to unplug wires from the window switches, A/C switches, etc... (Make sure you label them or take pictures to be sure the wires go back where they belong.)

The hardest part of removing this console is getting it up and over the shifter as I mentioned above. The 'easy' way is to unbolt the emergency brake from the floor. You'll need to put it in the 'up' position to get the center console up and out of the way and then back down just before you slide it back out of the console.

The shifter assembly is held together with 4 bolts and 2 wires for reverse. Very simple and straight forward to come apart. Interestingly, there was oil/fluid in the bottom of this assembly. I'm thinking that somewhere along the way, somebody sprayed WD40 or dumped oil down there to improve the shifting and there it sat....<huh!>

Most who have seen my car comment on how clean it is, which is nice, but the truth is that the vinyl on the console is very soiled. Prior to my ownership, something was spilled and has scarred the vinyl there and on the door panels. While they look great from 10', up close is a different story and out under the flourescent lights is....well, you can see in the pics. (UGH!) I'm amazed at how dirty it really is under the lights as it did not look this bad in the car. I cleaned the heck out of the console last year when I Leatheriqued the seats.
I'll be taking the piece to be re-covered this week. I'll post more pics on that in a different thread. In the mean time, enjoy this one. :)

The last set of pics shows the R&R of the shift linkage bushing. This is very straight forward, especially with Verell's tool for R&R. We'll see if it makes a difference in the 5th gear shifting, though I'm pretty sure that I'll be dropping the trans pan next.

For now, the shifter pieces are on my workbench. I'm going to give everything a good coating of Swepco 101 MolyLube and put it all back together, maybe even tonight. Hopefully the vinyl won't take long and I'll be driving again soon. (I may wait on the door panels depending on timeframe and cost.)

POURING rain today and SNOW tomorrow. I drove on Saturday, so I had my fix in. I'll have it back together soon. This really needed to be done before I drop the trans pan to see what's up with my 5th gear selector.

Speaking of driving, when the heck are you gonna have your car buttoned up? How about a status update. :)! (Sorry to hijack my own thread. LOL!)

Reminds me of my mess I fixed last year in my 308, right down to the goop, grease and dust bunnys. :)

Jim, if you are going to recover your center counsol TRY to get the same or near same THICKNESS of leather. Since Connely is history, I went with MB leather. GREAT STUFF and darn near impossible to scuff (within reason). HOWEVER IT IS almost TWICE as thick as the Connely stuff.

Got it all back from the coach builder and "WOW" was all I could say !!!!!!!!!!!!

    B U T ................

You can imagine the VERY painful and VERY SLOW cutting I had to do in all the holes in the counsol to get that "extra" leather out so the goodies would fit.

Just food for thought and GOOD LUCK !!!!!
