My 575M was delivered with only one black fob. Can a new set be programmed as spelled out in earlier threads here or does it have to be reprogrammed using an OBDII tool?

Posted this on the 456/550/575 thread earlier, but maybe it will help someone here. Complete specs on the Fiorano package if anyone needs it.

If you have the alarm key code for the car (probably in your Owners pouch) then you could buy a set of 3 Key FOBs (about $500). One red, two black. You could program them yourself if you have the patience.

If you do not have the alarm key code you will need to get a complete alarm ECU kit with key FOBs (about $2000) This new ECU is kit is programmed to the Motronic ECUs in your car which would need the SD3 to do.

Mike- Thanks, that is a real relief to me. I do have the PIN, but am missing the Alarm Manual. Any chance Ricambi has one for sale?

My 575M also had only one fob. You need to see a dealer and provide a copy of your drivers llicense and car title as well a check for, as I recall, about $350. It takes about three months to get 2 new black fobs and the master red one from factory. The dealer then reprograms your sysytem-takes about 15min. The you toss the old one away.

Lou- Thanks. I have already provided my title and driver's license to Boardwalk, who are ordering the fobs for me. They have gone up a bit, though, to above $500, but arrive more quickly. No dealer here so will probably have to program them myself. A new service organization is just starting here with an FCA sponsor, but no experience programing fobs. Thank goodness for the help we receive here on the forum. Makes ownership not so scary when you live in the hinterlands.

    Hi Terry,
I see you live in ABQ. We are at our Santa Fe house for the summer with our 2005 575M 6 speed. Also purchased from Jennifor a year ago. PM if you need any advise on your purchase. My only issues here in NM is low octane fuel and slow cold start. We usually head out for a rural Sunday brunch and the wonderful open 2 lane black tops.

    Taz,

I'm glad it all worked out for you. Just make sure the code you have is indeed the alarm code and not the actual metal cut key code - you dont want to end up with some remotes that will not program and then have to buy the alarm kit as well.

We have had remotes in stock before but do not right now. We usually refer people to the dealer because of the length of time it takes to get them. Need anymore help with the car just give me a shout.

Mike- Many thanks. I have the feeling I will be talking to you soon since Ricambi comes highly recommended by everyone on this site. I do indeed have the original paper PIN. I breathed a huge sigh of relief when I found that in the owner's packet.

I love your interactive parts manuals. Any chance you will do those on a CD or a download for sale? Did not cheer me up to find a set of brake pads for the Fiorano package costs ~$2K, but valuable information.

Mike or others. Please correct me if I’m wrong, but it my understanding that the remotes themselves are not programmable. That they come in a set, two black, one red, and what you must do, or have done, is to program the alarm ECU to accept the codes burned into the remotes.

In other words, you can’t program remotes, you can program the ECU.

When you do this the other remotes you have left over will no longer work as the ECU will only recognize the new codes.

ferraridriver- You are absolutely right. The fobs are transmitters only and the ECU learns the new PIN and identifiers of the one red and two black fobs. Your old fob is then rendered obsolete. There are extensive threads on how to do this if you do a search on "Alarm PIN". A few people have learned how to clone one black fob to another and that is covered also in the same set of threads.

My only concern was that Ferrari might have changed how to reprogram the ECU after the fitting of OBDII on the later cars. Thankfully they have not since there is no dealer near here. In states requiring emissions tests, the OBDII is a real blessing, and the test takes only five minutes or so.

Another question for Mike would be if a black fob was lost, is it possible to program the ECU to learn an old one by using the same reprogramming technique? As far as I understand it, only the red fob has the PIN in it and the ECU just recognizes the two black fobs.

Gary- Good to hear from you. Your six speed is rare, and, unbelievably, Jhanifor has another one for sale. She and Boardwalk have been really easy to work with. She remembered you and said to say hello.

I have so little experience with the car, I do not even know whether mine is harder to start or not. There is actually a high altitude setting for the 575M and that may actually be your problem. Just not enough air in Santa Fe. My house in Albuquerque is at ~6000' so would imagine yours is close to 7000'. Mine has not been reset for high altitude either, so I need to get that done.

I replied to you earlier, but must have forgotten to hit the blue outlined submit button. My apologies. We should get together sometime. Lots of Ferrari roads around here. PM me and I will send you my phone number.

Bruce- Affirmative. We may even be related. From South Carolina originally. PM with my phone number coming. Give me a call. I am out of practice being a Ferrari owner, but am enjoying relearning. My 08 Z06 was used 537 miles in a year of driving so was not exciting me too much. The 575M has been driven every day but one since I got it.

When I grow up (probably never), I want to have two Ferraris like you. I always wanted a TR, but figured I would probably kill myself in one the way I drive.

    Hi Terry,
I will PM you with a cell contact. Re higher altitudes and starting I replaced the battery recently. Got an exact replacement from Interstate ABQ, Made in Spain ! My dealer in FL tells me that hesitant start up occurs initially after a battery disconnect as the car learns the altitude. It seems already better. He had not heard of an adjustment for altitude. Hesitant to use Octane booster but Shell gas here is sometimes only 90 and they slip in 10% + ethanol ! I have 2500 miles since purchase and it is just great. Hunkers down on these mountain roads, I can just believe I am in the Italian Alps ! Incidentally Lou lives 6 miles from me in Sarasota and has a super red 575M and a grey F430. Small world. Hi Lou our R8 arrived and Candice went back to pick it up and store it until our return.

Gary- Ethanol actually boosts octane but has ~33% less enargy than gasoline, so mpg suffers directly. Funny, my 575M also has an Interstate battery, better than the ~$400 for a dry Fiamm.

mjw- You can do it yourself. Here is the procedure written down by fellow Chatter Dr Dave. You must have your original alarm ECU PIN, however. If not, you need a new alarm ECU, three new fobs, and a reprogram using an SD3 at the dealership. Three fobs are ~$500, add the ECU and you are looking at ~$2000.
