This weekend it was pointed out to me yet another 355 gremlin, the lower window guide weld inside the drivers door tend to break. A mechnic wiggled my door and window proveing the obvious, my had broke too. I never noticed it before that minute, but than ever second of my 50 mile ride home yesterday I could hear nothing but that damn door rattling (thanks David).
So ths was how my Monday was spent, there are 3 allen screws under the panel where the handle is, 2- 10mm nuts near the door hinge, and 2 more under the door itself, don't forget ALL before attempting removal of the outside panel.
I used a small piece of galvinized metal a couple of stainless steel screws and washers, whole job 1.5 hours, cost=85 cents, savings from a dealership=$225 :).

    A note to all 348 and 355 owners --

We were told that this problem exists on most 348 and 355 driver doors due to the high frequency of door closing over the years.

So if you hear a rattle while you're driving, or if the driver door seems particularly stubborn when you try to close it, this is probably the reason.

Good job Michael on the do-it-yourself job. :)

I've been telling Michael for a while now... the 355 is basically the same car as the 348 ;) ... many of the little gremlins of the 348 are your problems too 355 owners! :D

Michael - awesome car colour! Looks great...

My 355 has the same rattle - from what you saw in there, would it be possible to hit the join with a MIG to weld the bits together? Is access good enough?

    Thanks, Dave

Thank you Dave, yeah I would say a mig is the "proper" way to do it, although you couldn't get to the back side, so it would only be a front tack.

The 355 spider I purchased apparently had this problem...the selling dealer fixed it gratis...but they replaced the window regulator to the tune of $1450 for the part, and about 2 hours labor ($105 per hour). When the passenger side breaks, at least I know I can DIY. Thanks for the tip!

Interesting - I never thought about getting to the inside of the door from outside rather than the inside. How much work is it to take that panel off? Is it just screwed on? Can you access the speaker in there? I was thinking of replacing my speaker and someone on the other thread mentioned its not too bad but I thought they were going from the inside.

I was thinking the same thing about the speaker from the outside, but I took a look and no go, has to be done from the interior, and yes just screws to remove the panel, some 10MM's and 3 alenn screws, took 15 minutes to remove. Just be careful, you have to squeeze the door handle to remove when the screws are all out, and same to install. Thank you Lussos.

I was just directed to this thread to complete one of the fixes on my list, I think I will give it a go and use the TIG instead so there will be no chance of spatter from welding.

I'm 90% certain that I have this issue with my driver's side door. Does anyone have additional pics of the before and after of having these symptoms?

sorry don't have a before and after picture of the rattle, but it's a simple fix .

I removed the door scoop pod (very simple task, just a few nuts and hex screws), this gave me great access to the broken runner. A few zaps with a MIG welder and it was as good as new - no more door rattles!

When in the door, i cleaned and greased all the window runners and the regulator cables. The window did go up and down smoother and quicker. It was such a quick and easy job, i done the passenger side at the same time.

You can see more easy jobs for your 355 on my small restoration thread:

I have an annoying rattle in the drivers door, but mine seems to come from further to the front. By the speaker. When driving if I push on the door pad around the speaker it stops. Any ideas?

You'll need to pull the door panel off to inspect...not to worry it is not difficult, just lots of fasteners. There are online tips here on this forum...just use the search function. :)

it looks like there are two window runner inside the door from these photos. Do both have a tendency to break or just the one?

Seems to be focused on the larger one, on the right. That was the one that broke on my car, and is pictured on the two cars above.

Thanks @Merdav for the how-to. My driver's door was slightly rattly, so I opened it up and found that someone had been there before and "fixed" it using a couple of cable ties:

I replaced that bodge with a strip of aluminium and a couple of rivets. Much neater!

Lubed the runners while I was in there. The glass now goes down and up much more smoothly and is quicker.
