Just select a car...say a 1979 VW Rabbit, and you should be able to do a parts search look up, on any number of parts supply sites. Just ensure it is the two pole design...later (I think starting with the Golf) they went to a three pole design. The two pole was used from 1975 to at least 1983. Should be identical for the Rabbit, Scirocco, Jetta, Dasher, 924, etc.

Try here: http://www.autodoctorparts.com/ run a 79 rabbit, and you will see both temperature variants available for $10 each.

Those show as 90 or 102 degree celcius switches. That actually converts to 194 or 215 Fahrenheit. Seems like the same or worse. Or I'm missing something, which could very easily be.

good point, i was at the parts place this weekend with the box my vw switch came in. i wa curious as to when the switch turns on the fans. the car runs around 180 on the highway and 195 in traffic, i also have the new QV fan upgrade. the Soresen switch does not come up on the net with specs, nor could the kid at Advance tell me from the computer, what the temp was. the box is in the garage, when i get home from work tonight i will post the part number.

I am the guy that started the original thread on this about 3 years ago. The stock ones were not the 180, those are aftermarket items ( I own 3 VW Sciroccos). I haven't bought one in several years but I will search around for the invioce. Meantime: do a internet search for fan switch, VW, Watercooled, Scirocco 1980, and it should pull up something. I'll get back to you this afternoon.

This is correct. That is why I said to search for a 1980 model - those are 2 pole. My 87 Scirocco is a 3 pole and will not work for us.

I had a souped up Rabbit in college...as stated before the 180 degree switch is not stock, as they ran 195 switches for emissions or some such reason.

I know that Neuspeed used to sell the lower rated one...in fact any on-line VW performance shop should have them...all the kids use them. ;)

Look under engine mods, page 12 lower left corner of page...they have them!

You can always go to a place like NAPA and they can measure the threads/pitch and they can find one the will match, kick on options and the whole deal.

I bought a $23 Hayden adjustable fan control... adjusts from 32F to 258F.

You can use the cheap model #3653 because the system is already relayed.

10 minute installation (and that includes cutting wire and crimping on connectors).

No draining anything. I wired this in parallel to the factory switch for redunancy. Zero mods to the car. Only change is I can determine at what temp the fan comes on.

    http://www.lbcarco.com/browse/HAY-3653.html

But available at Pep Boys, Autozone, etc.

    An update from Sept. 2022:
I recently needed to replace the fan switch on my '77 308 GTB. I searched locally and on-line, and didn't find anything until I started looking for a '77 VW Rabbit unit. That search produced a match from NAPA. Their FS252 switch worked perfectly: https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/ECHFS252. It was the only source I could find, currently available.
