ok folks, i searched the archives, and Google and Ebay. my understanding is that Compomotive makes a "TS" wheel that looks very much like a 288GTO wheel that i can put on my 308GTB. i found one site, www.usacomp.com , but of course they are closed on the weekends and have no prices listed.

i would like to know if there are other sources or manufacturers of wheels that have the look of the 288 wheel. i have elected to use 16x7 front and 16x8 rear. i have no use for 17 inch wheels on a old 308. HRE made a wheel like this a long time ago, as did Speedline. i have not been able to find any size, price or finish info (i prefer polished/ clearcoat wheels).

Ferrari member "Mule" posted this pic of these wheels on his stunning 328 . i have "borrowed" his picture to show an example ot these wheels.

Great picture and thank you for the compliment! Actually, when I searched, I found out that HRE and Speedline no longer make those style. I talked to both over the phone.

After 6 months of searching, the only sources I found were Compomotive (the website you listed) and www.garedcars.com. The GA Red Cars wheels look similar, but they could not provide any pictures on a car, so I went with Compomotive.

On a 308, you will have more of a dish in the wheels. Meaning, the bolt face willl be farther tucked in. Mine is a 1989, so it had the Convex wheels, and the new ones had to follow that offset.

There are some more cars on here with the same wheels. A red 308 and a blue 328.

I'm not sure if the wheels that Nick's Forza Ferrari has are available in a 16" or just 17.

    Agree with Mule -
GAredcars.com is a good bet. They make a 3 piece wheel, the 2400 SM in the Ferrari section, that shows to have a Ferrari center.

Your No-**** best option, IMHO, is to contact FChatter Robert Garvin who is looking to sell a sweet set of 16" HRE 288 GTO replica wheels off of his superb GT/4. They are even the correct offset. Not cheap, but those and the Speedlines are the top drawer choice.

To see a set of speedlines, but in 17", check my profile.

please correct me if i am wrong, but i have spoken to Mr Garven through Pm in an effort to try to help him find the "right" wheels for his car, for concourse purposes. my understanding was he is selling the QV 16 inch style wheels and not the "288" HRE's. i have a set of 5 "QV" wheels, though one is cracked and broken, and hangs as "art" in my living room. :) i really wont know if the original set of 14 (inch) wheels on my GTB that is bieng delivered will be of any help to him at a show, at the level he requires. if they will work, i will of course let him know before sticking them in the attic with all my ancient Trans am and Z28 stuff i have. i am in no rush, its really hard to make plans if you dont know the final cost or options available on the market, hence this thread. the search continues! :) best.

He told me he was interested in selling the HREs as well, some 3 - 5 weeks ago.
    Worth asking - he's a great guy.

I was never particularly fond of the fake knockoff center nut on the SL Comp aka Speedline wheels, I contacted them quite awhile back when I was considering some for my 328 but I decided I like my stock wheels better on the car.

Anyway they can make the 2400 series which are the 2 piece GTO type wheel without the fake center cap cover, they basically copy the stock 328 type center piece so you can put the yellow Cavallino logo center cap in the wheel and it exposed the lug bolts, it gives amore stock appearance other than a larger wheel with a polished lip.

    Dear Friends,

Just to clear up the misunderstanding, I have a set of original QV wheels on my car I am going to keep and I have a very nice set of the HRE's all 4 7.5x16's which I have spent a great deal of money on. I am looking for a near perfect set (metal only) of early Campagnolo 7.5x14 wheels for concours to refinish.

If I can get my hands on a good set get them painted and mounted then I think I will have to sell the HRE's to avoid a costly divorce! :)

Malcom, you can correct me on this but Jeff looked and found 27 original NOS 7.5x14 wheels but all were Speedline, I was really hoping that I you had 4 of the original Campagnolos as 3 sets of incorrect wheels would be probably too much even for a nut like me.

Actually I dont want to sell the HRE but may be forced to, but not till I find a suitable replacement. I have had many 308 friends contact me to sell their original campys but still looking for that perfect set. I am leaning toward fixing mine up but have had no luck in finding whether they were magnesium or aluminum or an alloy. I have had several knowledgable experts tell me conflictling stories If they are aluminum I can probably fix my original ones up myself.

Sorry if I confused anyone as I am confused now about what to do!

    Rob

PS the HRE's ar the best "lookalike" 288 GTO wheel IMHO, and I am sorry that they stop making them as they are probably rarer now than the Ferrari wheel! They came with a plastic nut, but I had them custom make a set of aluminum ones to which I machined a piece of SS and drilled a hole through them and added a Ferrari horse, although not real they look very nice. I also had a custom made knock off tool made, and had to buy new wheel covers as the nut threads were different from the original, and the chrome was not very good on those so I had them rechromed, oh and the nuts that held the bolt cover on had to be machined so the new nuts would fit. I know it sounds nuts but I was really going to dial these wheels in, now they are nicest of tables!!!!

that is the coolest table i have ever seen.................................. anywhere........................ in my life......................................... :) if your wife is THAT mad about it, i will keep the HRE'S on my red GTB FOR FREE for as long as you need me too, ya know to "keep em out of your way"

on the more serious side, i wonder why no one knows FOR sure, what they are made of. i do know this for FACT, Pontiac made a special set of wheels for the WS6 TRANS AMS, and the wheels were "TRUE" magnesium wheels. "MAG" wheels in the 60's were used since they were lighter and better looking than stock. but true "MAG" wheels are very brittle and prone to catching fire, even from the radiant heat from the brakes when driven very hard. true magnesium wheels were outlawed by the DOT, for use on new cars and public roads and all the wheels that were dot legal in the USA were aluminum alloy. this was in the late 1970's, as Pontiac had a batch of WS6 trans Am wheels that were blamed for many accidents and deaths because they were cast wrong with too much magnesium. i have a set of these things somewhere in the attic, ( casting YJ6 with specific date code)

Robert's wheels look great, and the HRE's were the first path I went down without success. I especially like the center being chrome. One difference, I would say since mine are 17 inch, they are closer to F40 wheels. More wheel, less tire for the original overall height. Compomotive 16 inch wheels would look close to the HRE's and the 288 GTO.

If Robert sells his, the new owner will have a great set of (rare) wheels.

Mr. Garven, why are you rejecting the Speedlines at FoUK and looking for Campis? Do they really have that many Speedlines?????

They were used simultaneously along with the ones by Chromodora, IIRC.

I have seen the original 7.5" X 14" pattern by all three manufacturers.............

Those look nice, too. I would say by the spoke length, they look to be 17 inches or bigger. Or maybe the spokes are narrower than the HRE's.

I still think if you can find some HRE's, get them. If not, I am happy with my Compomotoves.
