Yesterday, while in Munich seeing a good client i had the opportunity to have a 'go' in his brand new M5 he had just taken delivery of. He told me only a handful have been released ahead of launch to 'good BMW customers'. Considering he has run a fleet of over 100 BM's for 20 years, you can see why.
I can honestly tell you that this car is superb, its beyond superb Wow its quick, i'd love to see what it would do against my 360, im guessing the result would leave my brow more than a little sweaty. Handling was immaculate and the 7 speed sequential gearbox is much improved over the one in my M3.

I have a DB9 on the way, and if it wasnt for the horrid back end of the M5 and the positivley Vile dash console, it be worried that i'd ordered the wrong car ! Honestly if you can find one ,drive one.

and no im not on commission from BMW

    Chris,
i think the M5 is a fantastic car too, though i obviously haven't driven one. The huge thing that puts me off buying one is the savage 1 st yr depreciation of 20 ish %. As a used buy they are spot on.

I have an E39 M5 now.I was getting very excited about the new M5 untill I saw the shape of it!! It,s so ugly.I drove the new 5 series last week for a couple of days whilst my M5 was being serviced,it was sooo depressing.Very happy to give it back!

Hence the reason why I subscribed to F-Chat.Ferrari 360 is going to be my next car now, will be looking to buy next spring. Will get an Audi A6 Avant for the work car.

    Can't wait for Springtime!!

if they show no passion about these M cars then, WOW, i'd really love to see how good they can become if they did show passion. My M3 is superb and that M5, hold judgment till driven i'd say

I agree totally. The new M5 will be amazing but I need my car to look good and to be apreciated by others. When I had the new 5 series courtesy car,I was a bit embarrased to be seen in it.Can't wait for my 1st F car.

    Chris,

was interested to know your views as i have an M5 on order. apparently, we in the uk won't see it until may/june.

let us know how your client gets on. any major "new car" bugs etc. have heard some iffy reviews of the SMG and the brakes.

    cheers

With regard to passion, wrong word. A BMW is to refined and Ferrari is more raw, you feel apart of it when you driving it.

I recently bought an e39 M5 as the family runabout and if the new M5 is better than that, it really is going to be some car!

I've not had it up against the 355 but there wouldn't be a lot in it in a straight line i wouldn't think. You can even fit a TUBI to the M5 ;)

Hehe...I would prefer to drive the Caddy.I was embarassed to drive it because I would hate for people to think I spent 30K on a 530d which is sooo ugly and had loads of bad press.I drive a Sprinter van most of the day,it beats the new shape 5 series hands down in kerb appeal!! Hehe

Im currently driving around in a 2001 M5 until I get my Ferrari back. On the plus side the car is just stupid quick. I've not driven anything faster. On the downside the steering lacks the feel that you get from a Ferrari. In fact I would say they feeling lets it down. Also the suspension is a little to comfy for my liking. Im not sure if adjusted in sports mode, or through the on board computer.

Also does that thing drink or what! I thought my 2 ton G300 drank, but its nothing compared to the M5.

Interesting flury on M5 talk lately. Funilly enough i am considering a LHD E39 '01 model for a good fast 4 seater as I don't think anything can touch it for £20k or so.

I was on a BMW club track day @ Donnington yesterday and had a chance to "observe" them on track, both through the windshield and my rear view mirror :) The consensus from the owners themselves is that it is an awsome road car but not a track car. M3's run rings around them being lighter and nimbler.

As for the "passion" thing I have been looking into the BMW racing culture. I have always snobbed german cars (and still do to a great extent) but looking at their history I am surprised at the racing commitment. What tops it for me is that BMW have 3day training courses for the Nurburgring and you can even download racing line docs showing every one of the 70 corners !!!

Oh and the M5 board seems to be a whole lot friendlier, less stuck up and more topic relevant than this one of late :(

I've had both an E46 M3 and an E39 M5 and didnt really notice a difference in the consumption of juice (tho I'm not that bothered about mpg's).

I would say that although a little bigger, I prefered the M5 overall - I thought the M3 had tramlining problems and this ruined the whole experience for me.

As for the new M5, I cant wait to see one in the metal. I think the looks are awesome from the pic's I've seen!

Stimmers360 - thanks for the input on the new M5. I'd be interested if you hear any more, or hear about any teething problems etc . I've put an order in for one a few weeks ago (am 10th in line at the local dealers) , so am waiting to test drive one before finally committing. Depreciation as TonyH mentioned is a worry, but with limited numbers available maybe its not going to be that bad.

I enquired about a new M5 a fews weeks ago as the review in EVO highlights it as something extremely special. Only downside is that book price is around the 62k mark but the dealer I spoke to said if I wanted one of the five he has arriving next year I'll be looking around the 85k mark.

And a £20k write off the second you drive it out of the garage. IMHO all of the previous M5's have depreciated massively over the first year or two. Maybe this one is going to be different - it certainly sounds like a great car from all of the write up's I've read.

I reckon the first 6-12 months, resalve valuse will be pretty solid as demand will far out strip supply, but then I would have thought they'll fall as the last M5 did.
