Car 456 MGTA parked outside (around 90 F.) all day. Full tank of gas. Went to start it. It kicked over and began to run for a half second, probably on fuel in cylinders. After that, the starter kept turning the engine over but no ignition. No fuel smell, even if I pumped the accelerator (something I never do) so I don't think it flooded. Left it for 15 minutes and tried again. Again, the engine turned but didn't seem to be igniting fuel. No fuel smell so I don't think it's the ignition system.

Anyone encountered this before or have any ideas other than some fuel pump problem? I'm guessing the pump just quit or the electrics powering the pump aren't working properly. RTGT said they were stumped without looking at it, so it's a 50 mile towing bill, if I can't DIMyself.

Do you have AAA+ ? if so its 100 free miles on a flat bead so its worth it.

One thiing I would recomend is remove the main fuel line rubber hose and have someone prime the fuel pump with the ignition for a 10th of a sec. If on and no fuel = fuel pump prob.

other safer way , click the car over to acc and listen for the pump to buzz if not...................

if you dont want to get in to it and get your hands dirty spend the money and bring it to your guy and get it done right !...................

Try checking the fuse for the fuel pump

Thanks. The following morning, I tried the car again before calling the towing company. Car started on the first try. Can late model injected F-cars be subject to plain ol' vapor lock?

not sure on the vapor lock but could it be a short to the fuel pump based on heat? Sounds like with a bit of cool down or such the connections is good. I'd have the wiring checked along with a intermit. fuse connection.

I just got word that it's not the fuel pumps; both had plenty of pressure. Apparently, the security system is cutting off power to the spark and injectors. Anyone familiar with this?

Do you think the cited thread would apply with the stock alarm/security system?

Not if stock. Don't know what else was done in there, but if all stock, then not IMO. However, don't know the config. of this car in question....just thought the link might have an insight.

My 456 has a clifford interface, which seems to be done well. It unlocks the doors, trunk and can do the alarms with no problems. But I have seen some truly poor wiring work on some cars...making me wonder.

Well, I'm confident my mechanic will chase the problem down eventually. I hate to say it, but going back to a Porsche Carrera is beginning to seem appealing, especially after spending over $4 grand last month because my A/C fan wasn't working.

Well, not so fast...He's narrowed it down to the security system, but the problem is still intermittent, but occurring ever more frequently and completely unrelated to ambient temperature. A puzzle that may require a trip to the dealer for ECU diagnostics. Grrrrrr.

I am investigating a fuel leak, or seepage if you will. I revealed the back of the tank by removing the access panel. It appears that there is a slow seepage from the fuel pump ports.
It is barely noticeable to the naked eye because it evaporates as it slowly seeps.

So, it is clearly apparent that I need to remove these ports with the big lock ring. First I need to burn up some gas...and make a tool to fit the lock ring. Then I can commence.

The diagram in the Ricambi site shows some sort of mini-derrick supported off the plastic port cover that the pump is supported from. This appears to be quite awkward. How do I gracefully, pull all of this stuff out of the hole? (I guess that is sort of a philosophical question as much as anything)

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks in advance.

Probably worth starting a new thread for this; pretty unrelated to my car's earlier maladies.
