I have always loved driving manual tranny cars. I'm sure the majority of drivers on this forum have had the same experience. It seems that when the F1 transmission was introduced it wasn't as good as the current iteration that is in the 360CS and the F430.
Early on, many more cars where sold with 6 speeds than F1. Recently I heard that the current situation is that 90% of all Ferraris are now sold with the F1.
So it seems that alot of old dogs have learned a new trick and are liking it. I was wondering what kind of experiences you have gone through with the transition to F1 or are you still a 6 speed lover.

I changed my mind an now sing the praises of the F-1. For the type of driving I do on a regular basis it cannot be beat.

Call me converted...I'm an F-1 driver now.

I'm going back to manual. Can't stand F1's first gear take off and launch control goes thru clutch's quicker than oil changes.

I still much prefer 6-spd, although I haven't driven the 430 F1. I spent nearly a week with a 575M F1 and saw nothing that would change my mind. I'm sure it's great on the track, but in daily life it is just not as smooth as most drivers with a clutch pedal. Then there's the fun factor, where the F1 fails completely IMO.

The gated shifter is an essential element of enjoying a Ferrari. By comparison, the F1 is just mindless video-game-like entertainment. (jmo, obviously...)

Count me as an unconverted 6-speed zealot!

6 gears. It's the same gearbox as the manual-shifting ones.

I too am a reformed manual operator. i would always critize people who pick the f1 over manual simply saying they are missing the most intergral part of the driving experience. I bought a stradale two weeks ago and I can say that I don't miss that beautiful gated shifter. In race mode the shifts are precise and certainly faster than I could ever shift. Actually, I feel more in control of the car. Both hands on the wheel. Annoying part is mistakenly hitting the wiper switch. Other than that I love it.

Although I much prefer the 6-speed to the F1/SMG in the abstract; one of my best friends has driven both and he tells me he thinks the F1 is better and it really feels like they developed the car for F1- which we know they pretty much did. I think when the time comes I will order the F1. I am lucky to have other cars that are stick shift. The F1 presents some variety. If I hate it, I will put another order in for a 6 speed and I will swap out.

    Best regards,
    Jerry

There is no answer to what's best F1 or manual. You have to base it on one's personal preference.

I have always bought my cars with a stick. Until I drove a 2004 M3 with a SMG, awsome, no way could I shift as well as an F1 setup and I do 3 or 4 track days a year. I liked it so much I bought a M3 smg and a 360 F1.I will never go back!

I am a die hard stick guy. ( no i'm not gay) I drove the 360 F1 and HATED it. Jerky, long pauses, sucked. I was for sure I would get a 6 spd when I bought my car. Then I drove the 430... THIS THING IS DISGUSTINGLY SMOOTH. Huge improvement in the F1 gearbox. Same gearbox as the Enzo I am told. No way would I buy a stick now.

i was very leery of the F1 tranny in the CS - but there was no other option, so i was stuck with it. net-net i enjoyed it. i wasn't per se "converted" to F1 status, but it was pretty damn amazing for downshifting. upshifting it was faster than me in many situations, but i didn't see a big win there.

if i could have bought my CS stick, i would have. if i buy a Maranello replacement, it'll be stick.

    doody.

That is, if it's available in stick. With the recent push towards F1 trannys (who would have dreamed Ferrari would have 2 F1 "exclusive" models?!?), there's no guarantee any future Ferrari model will be available in a standard manual. Regardless of wether you prefer F1 or manual, this can't be good news...

From all the posts thus far it appears that there is a somewhat equal division between F1 and manual. Of course this is an incredibly small sampling but with that said, Ferrari in all it's wisdom has decided to produce F430s at a 9 to 1 ratio of F1 to 6 speed. You would then conclude that maybe they know something we all don't?

Yes, they know how to keep repairs/maintenance dollars coming back to their dealers.
All these "F1 enhancements" certainly make it difficult for independent mechanics to work on/repair these cars. Perhaps this is Ferraris way of keeping some business at the dealerships, once the few allotted cars are sold and gone?

Driving the F1 just didn't do it for me. Horridly long takeoffs, too much clutch slippage, and the car felt like it had "turbo lag" when shifting. It had no "pop", no "spark" like the 6-speed did. The choice was crystal clear for me.
