I love the automatic in the 400 and 456. Some people say that the replacement costs are outrageous. But because of the notchy F gearboxes I figure that I'm saving on tommy john surgery.

Sorry but this is a point of contention here. You might try a search first. You'll find that you should drive both and then decide.

I want my thirty seconds back now....wait 02 howell mountain...nice...

Haven't driven F1 gear before but I have always asked friends who do have they say that it gets a bit of getting use to and then it is fun. But IMO sports car should have the feeling of clutching in and the clanging of the gear gate.
I still can not imagine driving F1 gear fun but again that's me as I love gearing on my 328 and 512TR.

thx for your opinion. I really did not know this was overly discussed in past. Yes, I agree with you on manual shifting. it really is rewarding.

instead of tell you to look it up i will give you my current impressions..this is based on the 360 and 355....the f1 on the 360 is great fun, however, the 6speed was greatly improved on the 360..much more positive throws and better clutch up take than the 355, so in the 360 the speed was more fun and engaging to me....on the track the f1 is faster and safer....with the 355, i wasnt crazy about the poor ergonomics and the 6speed had long throws and wasnt that positive...so i wish i had an f1 with my 355....i am sure the 430 rocks either way, i wonder if they have improved on the manual on te 430 vs the 360..even with the 360, the manual wasnt as good as the 997 porsche or new boxster, or the M3 or the honda s2000....

I've got to disagree with you, at least as compared to the M3. The manual in my '04 Modena is slicker than the manual in my '02 M3.

my bad Gary, i have only had a few brief test drives in the m3, one a coupe and one a cab....you have more experiece...my 360 was an 02, but i assume the tranny was the same for the 04 360s....

F1's are cool, but not as fun to drive.

Also, the clutch on F1's have to be changed out way more frequently, and thats a $4k job.

Is that an opinion based on experience? I must be way behind on the clutch changes since I've only done it once in the 33,000+ miles I've accumulated on my car.

I have heard that the F1 in the 355 was very reliable as long as you didn't continuously get on it real hard (from an F-car mechanic, I have no 1st hand knowledge).
