Well, I must say this is my first post here and I have already come to the conclusion that I will be able to have all my questions answered here.. simply amazing :)

Now, I am going to be purchasing my first ferrari come soon.. and dont want to start off too large (was looking at a couple 430s), so I have come to the conclusion I am going to look into a MINT used 360 coupe.

I have found some GREAT deals and will most likely be buying a 2002 Modena. Now, I have a couple of simple questions. I am wanting to pick one up with the f1 transmission (semi-manual) but have heard that I will be going through clutches quite often (3-4k miles) rather then that of the manual 6-speed transmission.

Is this true? or is there no truth to this at all?

The reason why I would like to go with the f1 transmission is due to the fact that there will be times my wife may (my god, a VERY rare occasion) drive this vehicle (with myself in the passenger seat of course) and her driving a manual is no fun.. on her and my part.

I also live in southern california and I have owned MANY manual vehicles and at times, the traffic here makes me hate them.

Also, what should I look for when purchasing this vehicle? I have been looking at a few dealers (www.newportimports.com mailny) as well as ebay. Should I be on the lookout for anything in particular?

Thank you ahead of time, and I can't wait for this car!

I have 12,000 miles on my current F1 clutch and have about 11% wear. If you drive in traffic you're numbers will probably be higher (on the wear side). It all depends on how you drive. The clutch will last a long time if you drive it right and in the right conditions. Don't back your car up a hill, the clutch never really engages, just keeps slipping. If you do a search on the subject you will find countless threads on this topic. Good Luck.

    Matthew,

    Welcome.

The issue you raise here is as contentious as the proverbial Ford Vs. Chevy challenges!

Use the search function and you'll find globs of threads on this topic.

And, yes, nearly everything Ferrari will be answered in one manner here. It is truly amazing what the wizards here come up with!

Yes, buy an F1 and leave the 6 speeds for the rest of the real ferrari owners in the crowd :)

hehe.. sorry, couldn't resist. I have a 6 speed and love it. My 355 was also a 6 speed; wouldn't have a ferrari without a gate! F1's are probably great for the track, but for a street car, the 6 speed is the way to go.

Clutch life depends on a number of factors. City driving and backing up a lot are big killers on it. Make sure that if you buy a 360 you have a qualified tech check the clutch wear and tell you what the remaining life is. The same guy should give the car a once over to make sure everything is perfect. There are lots of lower mileage cars out there so I would stick with that because the guy you sell the car to will probably want one too. A lower mileage car should not show any excessive wear in the seat leather for example. Some car's wear and tear does not jive with mileage. Check that the service is up to date and if it isn't ensure that the price reflects it. Don't buy a car sight unseen either. There are plenty of cars around here so you don't have to settle for some other place. Newport European is a good dealer, talk to Tim if you haven't already.

Buy a 6-speed so that your wife can't drive it :) I love my 6-speed, to each his own though.

Please knock the person, who told you the above, up the side of his head.

A properly adjusted and properly driven car will not need a clutch change for quite a while. I didn't have to change mine until it hit 30,000 miles (now near 40,000 miles total).

If I end up coming out, I will! I may play howard Hughes this year though and stay inside working on the computers :) I'm working on a new internet business and behind schedule. I may go cruise around town, so if you see the titanium 360 with challenge grill, that's probably me :)

Are you guys showing your cars or just going to the event? I had my 355 in there one year.

F1 is the more popular option, but get an 02 or later, but women(or uncoordinated men) have just as much problem with a paddle as they do with a shifter. Clutch life depends on the driver.
We have seen 6-speeds go 30k with no problem, but have seen F1's burn clutches in 6k miles.
Have the clutch wear checked, as well as the rest of the car.

Does anyone know if you can read the clutch wear using those little ODBII readers they sell?

haha. you and me both. I'll be driving around Monterey though, even if I don't make it out.

BTW, I just bought one of those Innova 3110 OBDII readers off ebay. I'll let everyone know how they work once I get mine :) I don't think they read the clutch wear from what I see on ferrarichat, but it appears they are handy for check engine lights and codes, etc. So we'll see what it does. I know my car has the ground wire update on the OBDII port, so I should be ready to roll when it arrives :)
