I am about to close a deal on an E36 M3 located in a different state. I have done Carfax, an inspection, etc. Because I am buying from a private individual, I am unsure of the best way to handle the transfer of funds. The seller lives in San Diego--I guess a private escrow service could do this, but I am unsure of how to search for those types of businesses. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Second, what do people think about open (not enclosed) transport? This is a 20K daily driver/to be track car, not a rare find. While I don't want it to be damaged, I don't much care if it gets rained on.

    Thanks--Scott

scotty, i use passport transport for all enclosed (they currently transport my newly acquired diablo). i also use gary almond, a member here. if it were me, i'd use open transport in this case. if you don't care if it gets dirty, it's relatively safe and it will probably save you hundreds.

    good luck

I would agree on the open transport. Will save you lots of money, and may give you more options and quicker turnaround.

As for the transaction, that's a tough one. When using eBay, they have an escrow option, and offer some guarantees, but a true 'private' transaction is tough when it's out of state. Do you know anyone in the area where the car is being purchase who could exchange cashier's check for title and keys? That would be my suggestion, and is something I've had to do before, both personally and professionally.

    Where is the car located?

I'm in Portland, Oregon and the car is in San Diego, California.

I was really hoping to use a private escrow company--are there any private "money for keys" services? Could an auto dealer perform that function (not necessarily the local Chevy shop, but perhaps a specialty shop like Symbolic motors)?

Wouldn't hurt to contact a couple of dealers. Non-franchised stores would probably be more likely to do what's referred to as an in-and-out, where they actually run the paperwork through the dealership. Most likely you will be charged anywhere from $250-500 for this service. I know a few people in the area, I'll ask around.
