well, the time has come to choose an exterior colour for my 1975 GT4 restoration project and i would really appreciate some feedback. unfortunately, it is not just a matter personal preference, as this car will be for sale...or at least that's what i'm telling myself now. i'm going to limit myself to period offered colours from the factory so the question is, do i really have a choice or do i have to paint it red ? will i be able to sell it if i paint it silver or perhaps a dark blue ( Pozzi like or what i like to call 'Hans Blue' ). will a colour other than red appeal to a 'wide' market or do they limit me to a very specific buyer in an already very specific market. i don't want to ' paint myself into a corner ', as it were. the interior is fixed, a mix of new and refreshed black leather. since these pic's were taken the quarter glass, chrome trim and all weatherstrip/seals have been removed.
does anyone have one of those factory swatches from the 1970's with the paint chips that they could photo and post ? thanks.

What was the original color? I'd stick with that. That way it will match the Heritage Certificate. Too many cars are resale red (like mine). I think the off colors are becoming more popular because of the uniqueness and collectors will want an original car.

    Cheers!

IMPO....i have to agree with "dino" the poster above....i would go with what the original color was.

Great gt/4s are rare, and even rarer when restored correctly. After all im sure there are less than 2,000 cars around today.

What was the original color ?

    Looking good Brent !!

i'm gonna have to figure out what the original colour was...even stripping it did not give it away. this car has been repainted at great expense at least once if not twice. we're finding two different colours in some of those really deep, dark places. really not sure about original but i'll dig deeper.
    thanks guys.
how do you feel about changing shades within a particular colour ? same as a complete change or not ?

    Brett,

If you have seen the "Dino Restoration" Pages, then you will know that THIS is the HOTTEST Ferrari color out there.....
Dino Metallico Blu. :) Pics stolen from here: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=94232
I would highly recommend this if you choose not to follow the Heritage Certificate. My car was this color out of the factory and I DREAM to get her back to it!

    Jim,
i **** you not, that looks very close to one of the two colours that we believe the car was originally was... incredible... man, F-chat really has changed everything. thanks for posting those pics. i may be able to follow the Heritage certificate AND have that colour. it was really hard to tell, in some spots it seemed like like one colour must have been original and in others not. certainly it was stripped before. likely the mid to late '80s...the only time it ever made 'sense' to do such a thing.
i think there is/was a little more silver in the blue on my car, like an 'ice' blue...like the 400a owners manual if you've seen one. i'll take a pic of my manual and post it later ( i'm dividing my time between the blaster, the paint booth and the computer right now ). i think colour that would be stunning over black hides.
man, that second 246 pic is so sweet i can almost hear it from here. beautiful silencer too. i got it real bad for these cars...

And while it was a rare option, you need to determine if the boxer colour scheme was originally used or if you want that anyway. I myself like that look.

Not only would it look stunning, but that is the new "Resale Red" IMO!! It's been said before, the 'off' colors really look good on the GT4, especially the Blue color options!

Two things to note in my opinion, either keep it the original colour or if you do intend on selling it unfortunately re-sale red is the go.The other thing is I cant imagine why you would want to sell the car after all the work and expense that you are putting into this car.You are going to have a brand new car after it all is done. You will be behind for sure.Although it will sell at a premium price you would surely still lose money on it unless you got the car for free
Oh and yes it looks very impresive as well

well, yes and no actually. yes, it will be a stunner. a zero rust, virtually as new 1975 GT4. how many of those do you think there are?
but no, i won't necessarily be behind and no, i didn't get the car for free. i do wish i got it for $3000 less though. i have a very unique situation and an, how shall i put it, extreme passion for the marque. you see my time is free. i have a fantastic young mechanic who puts in the full time hours while i do my 'regular' sales gig, and then i put in whatever hours i can, which do not 'add up'. i do all the cleaning, blasting and simple painting as my therapy on the weekends. it goes quite fast when you have the right 'gear'. he does everything else and i never cease to be amazed. so we do everything inhouse including our cylinder heads.
so this begs the question, what is a restored ( and this has to qualify ) GT4 worth ? this car has rebuilt heads, a fully serviced tranny with 2 new syncros and resurfaced flywheel, new clutch/t-out bearing/pressure plate, new Diff. bearings, rebuilt carbs, rebuilt calipers, rebuilt steering rack, rebuilt distributors, bare metal repaint, lots of new leather, etc.,etc.,etc.
there are lots of other parts but they were either already installed or i just couldn't fit them on them on the bench.
what do you think would be a reasonable price ? you'd be really surprised if i told you.

Light metallic colors (silver or blue) look great on GT4's.
I think $45000, or maybe even $50000 if you wait long enough, would be a reasonable price.

+1 on a resto like this. The only car we have to compare it with is the infamous 'Carobu Car" which some say brought between $45 and $50K.....

Good luck Brett, this one is going to be a stunner! The only thing you have against you is the exchange rate...

Thats almost like getting the car for free:D.Like the other guys have stated...I think its worth $50-60K to someone who wants an excellent example of this car that needs nothing else spent on it.Think if you can pick up a good one for around $25 you will be over that figure if you have to spend as much money as your one.I would buy it at that price. Its all up to how much you love the GT4 then price doesn't really come into it although my way of thinking is a limited market.Good luck with it Brett and if there is anyway that you think that you may want to keep it then that would be the right thought.

well, actually, i was wrong...none of you seem to be surprised. i thought you'd guess more ; ) i always had $45,000 Can. in mind as a selling price. i'm going to stick with that even though the walnut blasting took way longer then i anticipated. we also decided to replace all the guides and seals which was not necessarily in the original plan where the heads were concerned. the motor was really, really strong with very good numbers but we found both an intake and and an exhaust valve that leaked just a little more than we were comfortable with, so the heads got the full treatment. on the plus side we got lucky with the tranny. it only 'needed' 2 syncros as it had clearly been done fairly recently. 1,4,5 were above 80% spec. even 2 and 3 were 60-70 % but...did 'em anyway. it seems we're doing a lot of that.
there are also a couple of things that could send the price slightly higher if purchaser stepped in and requested them, like Stainless valves, ceramic coated headers and new rear seat leather. the front seats got it, but the doors, rears and all the other trim bits just got a nice redye (for now). i'm going to remove the A-arms, blast and paint them today and start pressing in all the new bushings.
i could add more pics later for those who follow this kind of stuff. is there an interest in more pics ? the whole process is documented but i'd have to resize them. here's a few in the meantime.

it occurrd to me that i should pull out my Original V8 book...as i mutter "Dumbass" to myself. anyhoo, it really is a much smaller colour selection then i would have thought. 2 solid blues (blu scurro dino and azzurro dino), 3 metallics (blu dino, blu sera and azzuro metalizzato) and 1 silver ( auteil ?)
can anyone chip in with pics of these ? on page 20 there is a small pic of a 208GT4 rear bonnet script on a blue that might be a contender and furthermore, may have been the original colour. i've attached a pic of my 400a manual because it is the colour i would really like to paint the car. the pic may not convey it but it is a suttle metallic, but is it one of the above mentioned metallics ? IMHO, it would be beautiful over black hides.

I agree that the car is 'worth' this much restored, however, the GT4 market is not quite ready to bear that YET. If Brett is patient and promotes his car right, he will eventually come across the right buyer for that car which will be a collector looking for a turnkey example to stick in a collection, OR someone overseas who will get the car out of Canada/N. America fast. Those buyers are out there...it may just take some time.

Adding pics to this thread will help it out. The other thing to do would be to start a "GT4 Restoration" thread and start back from the begining to show what you have done to the car.

    Good luck!

    Brett,

That looks like the Azzuro Blu color, but its hard to tell on this monitor. That or Dino Blu would be STUNNING IMO!!!!
Do a search for Alexander Leventhal or Rob Garven. They both have the GT4 color pallets and have posted pics of them here on FChat. You will find your color.
I think Dave Stacy might have as well.

The is certainly a bargain, Like Keith Martin says , the lucky buyer would be barely paying for th erestoration, the rest of the car is free. I have seen friends spend 40k on a chevelle body chassis & interior only, where you can parts from multiple sources for pennies compared to ferrari prices(look at seat covers for example, you could do the entire chevelle for the cost of the one seat cover for the gt4)

I think your price is right on for someone who loves the GT4 & has neither the time nor skill to do what you are doing.

Please by all means post more pics, its a rare chance to get a look at some of this stuff in its natural state.

thanks for taking the time to share.
