I have a 78 308 gts and i'm ready for an exhaust upgrade. I've heard great things about the Ansa sport & about the Stebro but i can't decide on which one to buy. I want to remove my cats and I have a K&N filter to put in, so i'm looking for more power along with the sound. If anyone has experience with both please let me know. Also let me know if one is better without cats.
All and any info is greatly appreciated.

I don't think the K&N is going to boost your power any noticeable amount, I think there are a few threads here on that. No comment on either exhaust as I don't have one of those on my car.

had one on my XKE and liked it and it is somehow related to Ferrari although I am not sure ( I think they make the euro OEM one or something) so the traditionalist in me opted for the Ansa...I was also considering the Timevalve..do a search here on Stebro there were some thoguths on the US dealer that might be of iterest.

    Chris,

I have a ca. 1982 ANSA Sport on my 1976 GTB. It's held up well for 24 years. You'll be happy with either the ANSA or Stebro. As NYCFERRARIS mentioned, the ANSA was the sport option for Euro carbed 308s in those days having the single outlet OEM muffler. The Stebro has removable inserts so you can adjust the volume depending on your needs or mood. Both have a similar sound and enhance the flat crank engine's note.

Removing the cats and switching out the muffler will help performance. I'm not sure how much the K&N will contribute, if anything. Just remember to maintain/oil it periodically as directed.

Consider the price also---I too am deciding which way to go the Stebro is about $1300--can't find a price on the Ansa as of yet... for my 328..

Have a 3.2 Mondial here (same engine/exhaust as the 328) - I replaced the stock single cat and stock muffler with a stebro muffler and stebro straight pipe in place of the cat. Definitely considerably louder but a wonderful sound at speed. At idle there's some booming but it's not horrible. The stebro muffler and cat replacement are very well made - nice welds and perfect fit. Does not come polished but I think this looks better as it's a lot less bling bling looking - the subtlety goes well with my subtle Mondial. As mentioned above, there are removable inserts for the four exhaust tips which is nice - gets a whole lot louder with these removed.

With both the twin and single cat systems you'll notice a material increase in power with the stebro muffler/straight pipe - I'd guess about 12-15 hp for a 3.2 QV and perhaps 10-12 for a 3.0 2V.

The ansa sounds a bit raspy to me. Also, I'm not positive, but I don't think the ansa is stainless. The stebro is very high quality stainless. Stebro sounds deeper than the tubi as well which I think is nice.

Dan at stebro is a nice guy but he doesn't have a reputation for reliabilty or timeliness. I'd advise paying with a credit card in case there are any problems. Good luck.

The ANSA Sport is "aluminized" steel with stainless steel internal components. Chrome tips.

I am pleased with my Stebro, I too added K&N at the same time. Seems to have improved power but that is just seat of the pants.

The big knock on stebro is the looks. I sent it out and had it cera-metal coated for $90.

    Search "stebro" I've posted photo's

here is a link to a sound file I've posted:

If you think that sounds cool, you should here it during deceleration. I don't have the equipment to record but a freind does and as soon as it stops snowing, I'll get some in-car recordings.

One thing I was afraid of was it being too loud in the car. It is not, it purrs.

How does the ansa exhaust system sound? i would assume that the ansa would sound very similar.

    John,

The ANSA Sport sounds similar to the Stebro with its inserts in. The ANSA website might have some sound clips:

    http://www.ansasport.com

Remember, the 308 engine will never sound like a F1. That sound is the result of high compression and RPMs. My muffler is an older version. The current style is a bit different:

Dyno'd on my 308QV, it made a consistent 2hp difference. Not much, but it is something...

Don't forget, if you're an FCA (Ferrari Club) member, you get 10% off at Stebro.

If Stebro/Dan has a clear conception of what model you need and have (lets be fair, there is quite a range with euro/us, years, some amount of likely non-stock monkeying already, etc.) then the fit of the particular (correct) muffler is excellent in my experience. While there is a little welding spatter here and there, the welds are excellent and obviously the work of a professional.

Dan's a nice guy - a little disorganized maybe, but a nice guy. I found the best tactic was to be super diplomatic but call the s&$* out of the guy - every day for an update sort of thing. I guess taking the call becomes more unpleasant than dealing with whatever may be slowing the production line.

Also, keep in mind that the pricing is good because there isn't a network of dealers with stock on the shelf (and the associated overhead) and hired customer service reps. At least Dan answers the phone personally, not somebody in Dubai with a bad accent.

Thanks for your all your input.. Barry I think you should remember me, I helped judge with you at the Garden State Fall Festival. We judged the 308qv's. I still don't know what to do. My car is going down to classic coach on Sat. for a spring check up & i'll see what they have to say.

Did you read the whole link? If not, go back and read it again. You're experience was good, but Don's was most certainly not.

    Good day Chris,

I came across some mufflers at SuperFormance that look not too bad and are not that expensive:

    http://www.superformance.co.uk/308/308exha.htm

I have no experience dealing with them or their exhausts, but thought that it might be of interest to you.

    Cheers,

Yes. Hi Chris. When you're at Classic Coach this weekend, speak to Rocco and Carlos about this. They understand what's involved and will be helpful in upgrading your exhaust system. I know you'll save the original parts.

Today 496 pounds are $860 dollars.

I shopped extensively when I bought mine and I don't remember this site but I think it may have been a time frame issue.
This is certainly the lowest price I've seen.

Since the muffler is so small I wonder if it is loud...
