    Hi this is a first time posting I've been offerd F40 Number 86762 the car was sent to Michelotto for some up grades (Seats Wheels Brakes etc) Should this affect the price compared to a standard car in the same condition. If you have any info it would be appreciated

    Dear Comrade Chris H,

    In my opinion and all things being equal you would be best advised to acquire a standard motor car. For myself, I believe that a modified car would be less desirable to many by virtue of the fact that it had been modified and therein lies the likelihood that it would be worth less. This notwithstanding, there may be others who would be pleased to acquire a car modified by Michelotto but I believe they would be very much in the minority. It'll be interesting to learn the views of others upon this forum.

    Chris, I think upgrades however good they may be, can have a negative effect on value. There are probably many more buyers, especially collectors, looking for a low mile original example and who would rule a modified example out. Having a history and annual documentation that can back up the number on the speedo could be desireable also.

    My enquiry on a '91 F40, revealed it had only been serviced twice in 15 years and the rest of time, been in storage. The mileage was under 20,000 kilometres but how much store can you put on the number, when no documentation? In fairness, normal car ownership rules don't seem to apply to something like an F40 and the history can be patchy. Bit of a minefield.

    What is the history like on the F40's owned by those here? Are large service gaps fairly normal, due to the lack of use that many F40's see?

    Interesting that this car went to Michelotto for seats, wheels & brakes. Michelotto usually gets involved with more substantial work that involves the drivetrain or a complete LM conversion. Is there documentation showing Michelotto's participation?

    The market has become very fussy. Indeed as other members have suggested, a standard car is best from the standpoint of future values (an issue that can hardly be ignored in the real world Im afraid), although one can hardly refer to an F40 as "standard"!

    There are many F40s with every detail of its maintenance life carfully saved amongst its records and those cars are clearly the best. Also cars that have had regular use are much-preferred. Look for unexplained large expenditure to find out about issues the car may have had. One former USA F40 owner spent $50,000 on the 1,000-mile car a few years ago and now it has been discovered that there was a reason for such expenditure (not a good one I daresay!).

    Well the changes they made can all be swapped back. As long as you get all the orginal parts I see no issue.
