Weird problem with the rear spoiler on my '94 456, no warning lights flashing or coming on the dash and the spoiler is always in the lowered postion, I have taken the motor off and it rotates when powered from a 12v battery, although it does not stop going round??? I have also tried the diagnostic test as recomended in the wsm and no warnings lights show. Any help thankfully received !!! And yes I have tried searching the site but can find no detail on how the rear spoiler works, i.e. is there a position switch or relay in the motor itself ?? If yes then would changing the motor will fix it ??

    Thanks

Hi, I am not sure I understand correctly what you describe, however, the motor is an actuator that is supposed to produce a linear movement, like those that operate the headlights.
You do not get a yellow light on the dash because the motor works, but probably what is broken is the internal gearing that produces the linear movement.
There is no position indicator for the spoiler, just the yellow light to indicate when the spoiler goes through its initial cycle check as soon as you turn the engine on and later on, if the motor is not working
Is the spoiler free to move up and down?

Yes it does give a linear movement, it does this by means of a cam which is integral with the electric motor, so the rotating motor drive connects via the cam to the spoiler lever and pushes it down and up. I'll try to explain the problem more, the 'rear spoiler' light does not come on at all, either at start up or whilst driving. The spoiler is always in the down position. I have checked the spoiler and it moves freely. I have also taken the motor off and connected it to a 12v supply and the motor rotates but it does not stop?? I am wondering if there is some sort of stop switch in the motor body which stops the motor, otherwise the spoiler would just go down then up and then down again, or is it all controlled by an ecu??

Do you have the Owner's Manual? On page 97, it describes a procedure to reset the spoiler. It sounds like it's intended to reset the limit switches.

The PDF file is 20+ MB and it's protected so I can't cut the images and send them alone.

    Hi Bryan,

I do have the owners manual and a wsm, what section in the owners manual is the reset procedure? as the manual is not page numbered as such, it is in sections i.e. F or G then page numbers within each section. Are you referring to the manual knob on the motor that raises the spoiler in case of an emergency?

Yes. Sounds like you have looked into this already.

Thanks for that, yes it is the 'in case of emergency' bit at the end of the rear spoiler section. I will try this in the morning as I have not disconnected the battery and raised the spoiler manually via the knob!! in the way suggested in the manual. I know that the ecu resets and does some setup stuff after a battery disconnect so perhaps that is how the system learns where 'spoiler up' is?, as it must have to stop the motor once the spoiler moves to the either the down or up position. I am starting to see how one can develope a love hate relationship with these cars !!!!

When you REALLY are getting to hate it...just start it up and drive it. Balance will be restored. Been there, done that.
