328 window lift assembly

    Greetings.

    Yesterday, the passenger window on my 328 quit going all the way up. I sort of figured it was the motor, except for this metallic rattling. I could lift the window all the way up, but it would not stay there.

    I disassembled the door today. The motor is fine, it's the lift mechanism that has an issue. On the 328, the window is driven by a spiral metal coil that is pushed forwards and back (up and down) by the motor via a gear-like machanism. The window lift bracket is permanently attached to one end of this coil, and the other is free floating.

    Turns out that the coil broke near the free floating end, so that the gear simply runs out of coil before the window comes all the way out. I had to remove the entire lift mechanism to confirm this. It's a pain with the window in (anyone know how to pull the side window?)

    The question is, is there any way to replace just the coil part of the lift? Anyone done this? If so, how do you remove the lift bracket from the upper end, and what cross-references to that coil?

    Ok, so I bought a new lift assembly, as the other one simply isn't designed to be disassembled.

    Am I right in thinking that that spiral coil needs to be lubed before installation? The one that came out was greased, and this one was not. I'm leaning toward getting some lithium grease and coating it.

    This is STRICTLY my opinion as I don't have ANY experience with it but.........

    Greasing two metal objects that will eventually create friction when they touch each other seems like the right move. If you don't, you will create extra friction which will wear out the motor quicker IMO. And that you don't want.

    I would do it even if the OTHER one didn't have it done. But since it does, it kind of makes it a no-brainer IMO.

    As for Huskerbill, this is strictly a personal opinion. I would use solid lubricant, like Molikote. Grease could retain dirt particles that, in the long run, could drive to failure of the mechanism. Just my 0.02 $.

    Just a followup....

    Don't expect Ferrari factory spare parts to fit.

    We ended up having to make extensive modifications to the correct part, because it was manufactured incorrectly.

    The window does work now though :D
