My 83 308 failed the emission test today in Bellevue. I have enclosed the results in hope someone knows what is wrong with my car. Neither FOS or Alfa of Tacoma were on the list of an Ecology Authorized Emission Specialists. What to do? Do I have to take it to the local Chevron station(on the list ) to have it fixed? Hope the results mean something to someone out there. My car has all smog stuff in place and had a major last year. The only non-oem related stuff on the car are the Ansa exhaust mufflers.

When you have a % of O2 in your emissions it is most likely there is a leak in your exhaust, and 02 is seeping in while CO2 goes out. That is what the guy told me when I had my emissions test done.

I'm hardly an expert, but you look pretty close...you might be able to lean out the mixture on the fuel distributor... if you can get the probe to test "pre cat" rather than post cat (there should be test ports on the exhaust manifold. But it could be your cat is bad too......

My 83 308 euro car failed the first one also. I took it to a friend of mine.Toms Performance automotive in vancouver, and had him tune the injection. The car passed with flying colors with no no cats or any emmission equipment. I was very surprised....only one more time and I will be exempt from testing.

    Philip,

I still have my old test results from a previous '83 308 that I had.

In looking at my failed test (w/test pipes & Tubi) and my pass test (w/cats & Tubi) ), compared to your test results, it sure appears that your cats are not working at all.

You could either try to find a set of good used cats, or maybe an exhaust shop could fit a couple of universal cats to your car.

Philip -- Check your OM -- Section 1 will give you some HC & CO targets for upstream of the cats (but, even with hollow cats, 3.5% CO at idle needs a tweak). The OM HC & CO specs might be a little to the "lean-ish" side, but you're a fair bit out.

If you're forced to go to a non-F shop, you might consider an Audi, Mercedes, or Volvo shop as these makes used similar K-Jetronic systems during the 80's.

Thank you all for your inputs. I have an appointment a Park Place Ltd. They're on list of approved Emission etc... I will look at my OM for details of pre and post cat results. If the cats are bad I will replace with those from Hyperflow.

    Thanks to everyones input,

    Philip

I'll repost the results of what I find after appt.

I took my 85 308 GTS QV to get tested a few weeks ago to the same place and it also failed.
It actually only failed the CO test at cruising speed. I got 8.67 out of a maximum of 1.0 !!!!!
I took my car to Gerber Motorsport, just a few blocks away from my house. They are specialized in Porsche and Ferrari. They are not on the WA approved list. But no matter what you need to pass the test, and you want you car to run correctly anyway.
I knew the car was running rich because of the high CO and CO2 readings.
As it turn out it was a bad water temperature sensor that was telling the ECU the car was cold, so it was trying to rich the mix. In real cold conditions, you would have more air into the mix, so it is no problem. But in hot conditions it was.
They replaced the sensor and made some preliminary readings. They recorded 0.02 % of CO at cruising speed.
I took the car back to the Emission center and it passes with no problems. The readings were so low that their equipment recorded "0.0"

Add alcohol to the fuel or that Bardahl product that guarantees passing.

I'm sure you've already been told that the prudent thing to do is put about 15 freeway miles on it before the test and to rev it high enough to blast out any carbon, right.

If you fail the test again, then there is always the waiver which requires evidence of a payment to resolve the issues after the first test.

Well, based on Canut's experience, wouldn't it be better to actually have the car inspected and fixed, rather than "band aid" it and muddle through? His car was actually not running correctly, and getting it properly fixed was the best thing. Imagine if he continued to run that rich it would have ruined the cat.

Canut, where do you live? I'm in Magnolia, and never seen a 308 around since I got rid of mine several years ago.

I live in Magnolia also. In the Northeast end, like 3-4 blocks from Gerber Motorsport and Goodman Racing. I just moved there less than a year ago probably that's why we haven't cross paths yet.

Thank you all again for the inputs. The car is at Park Place Ltd as we "speak" type. I dropped it off this morning. I haven't heard from them yet. I had internet problems until a few minutes ago so I have just read the posts since my last post. I will call them now and check out what they have found. I hesitate to tell them what the problem might be but thanks for the water sensor heads up. It might be just the problem. I'll post again soon.

Just had a 30k service on my TR, Gerber Motorsports was verry thorough. They have an ex-FOSeattle mechanic, and Mark the service writer and tech consultant is a Ferrari factory-trained wrench twister. They saved me beaucoup $ by diagnosing things like bad water pump seal, and bad injectors, which would have cost me more if the motor had to come out again. Saved me the cost of new plug wires, by testing each one, and cutting a little off where they contact the distributor cap.
Very happy with their service. Now the car's a monster.

Well I picked up my car from Park Place today. They found out that there was no vacuum signal to the air injection diverter. They replaced the vacuum hose and retested. The numbers came back very low in comparison to those previously. I will have the car retested tomorrow at the WA Emission station and I will notify all of the results. Thanks again for everyones input. If all goes well tomorrow I will bank the suggestions. If not I will have some ideas on where to look next.

Well here's the update on my test. I picked up the car at Park Place yesterday and they lost my door key. They gave me blank stares when they handed me my key chain with a missing key. I told them that the keys were on the key fob when I dropped it off. I guess they thought I would walk away with no comments concerning the key. Only after expressing my concern with my door key "floating around their shop" and their unwillingness to look again. They finally caved in a went looking again. This is where their blank stares came in, they said, "well it's not here and the tech doesn't remember seeing the missing key." I replied, "maybe it's because it was missing!" Any way they offered to replace it and I guess that's all that should be expected of them. This was my first time at Park Place Ltd. and it left a little to be desired.

Today I went back to the Bellevue Emission station. Long line today and while waiting for 1.5 hours the car overheated and spilled coolant everywhere. It was coming out of the overfill tube. I changed the oil yesterday and they topped off the reservoir as they told me. Don't know if it was overfilled but it got hot anyway. I was next in line too. Of course a tech came to tell me there was no way I could test, as my car was leaking fluid in a gross way. As soon as it was clear in front of me I was able to go through the facility and park the car on the other side. I started it up again and all the belts looked fine and all lights where out with temp gauges almost normal. I went next door to Schucks and bought two gallons of premixed coolant. It took almost the two gallons. I made sure to to not overfill it since it was still hot. ( it should be checked when cool).

I returned to the test station and reentered the even longer line. The temp gauge stayed at 195 the whole 1 hr wait. I retested again and still FAILED! I passed all tests except the idle CO (%) was still at 1.72(1.2 limit). I had to talk to the onsite manager to get a waiver. It was then that I was told the tech that signed me off at PPLtd was not on the state approved list. He checked a few places to trace the tech's certification but no luck. He waived me anyway.

I called PPLtd as soon as I got home. They say that the guy is approved and there is a mistake with the state. Well to say the least it makes me wonder about PPLtd! I am able to register the car anyway with a waiver for two years but just when I thought I had a local car place to have it serviced. Carlo is the man!

    Thanks for listening :)

PPltd should have given you before and after CO readings with the service record. What were they reading at their shop? Seems strange that they would measure below 1.2 CO, then when you get to the testing place it is reading higher.

I'm no expert on this stuff, but you might want to check around. If "pre cat" your CO is still too high, it can really tax the catalytic converter and cause it to fail. I would still want your car set up to the correct settings. Particularly "pre cat", but also post cat, so you can pass the test.

I'm probably wrong, but the way you wrote it above it sounds like you left the car idling while in line for 1.5 hours the first time and 1 hour the second time? That's a lot of idling. I'm no expert either but that could be part of the problem couldn't it?

The only data from PPLtd's test was written on the original Vehicle Inspection Report given to them for their analysis. It is as follows:

    Test type: ASM

    _____________HC(PPM)_____CO(%)_____CO+CO2(%)____O2 (%)____RPM
    Cruise Limit:_____150________1___________6___________N/A______N/A
    Cruise Emissions:__82_______2.45_______16.15_________0.22 ______N/A
    Cruise Result:____PASS______FAIL________N/A__________N/A______N/A
    Idle Limit:________220_______1.2_________6___________N/A______N/A
    Idle Emissions:____320_______3.89______16.09_________0. 95______900
    Idle Result:_______FAIL______FAIL________N/A__________N/A______N/A

    PPLtd's entry:
    IDLE_____________56________.84
    2500(cruise?)_____31________.21

Below are the results of the second test:
    Test type: ASM

    _____________HC(PPM)_____CO(%)_____CO+CO2(%)____O2 (%)____RPM
    Cruise Limit:_____150________1___________N/A__________N/A______N/A
    Cruise Emissions:__69_______0.91_______13.31___________3.4 ____1200
    Cruise Result:____PASS_____PASS________N/A___________N/A______N/A
    Idle Limit:________220______1.2_________0_____________N/A______N/A
    Idle Emissions:____190______1.72_______13.12___________3.9______510
    Idle Result:______PASS______FAIL________N/A__________N/A______N/A

I failed the test since the idle emissions were still 0.5 greater than allowed. Every other category went down except for both O2(%) readings went up in the second test. Thanks again for help in understanding the results and allowing me to actually fix the car. Pass or not I just want the car to run well and not pollute if possible.

Next step is to read all posts on overheating issues with the 308 and prioritize them for effective cooling. I would love to track my car one day but I'm a long way off until this car purrs.

Those readings are still pretty high.
I do not trust PPltd at all. They have shown a complete lack of ethics. May be it is just me having bad luck. Here is why.
I signed up on the waiting list for a Lotus Elise in December 2003. Originally they gave me a delivery date of April 2005. Which it was long compared to other dealers. Then the delivery date started to get push back, due to "allocation" problems. Last delivery date they gave me was December 2006!!!! But at the same time they have like 16 cars on their lot that can sell to me for $3,000 over MRSP. One of those cars has the exact options I ordered. The fact is that there are dealers selling these cars at $2,500 below MRSP.
When I went to get my deposit back, after talking with them on they phone, they played "the check is in the mail" game. After I went a second time to pick up my check, they try to do it again. This time I wasn't going anywhere without my money ($2,500), they ended up calling the manager to his home and the accountant had to drive back to PPltd to write me a check.
I am glad I did not buy the Lotus, since PPltd is the only authorized service shop to work on the cars.

I am not surprised with PPLtd's reputation on this board. My stuff is so minor but it makes you wonder. I really would have been happy to use them for some service items. They are so close and the prices they post for mx is reasonable. I will stop by there again to get another key made and I will check on the tech issue too. Maybe then I will leave there happier than the last two times.
