Are you bored? Good, then read this little story. When I was a kid, maybe 12 or 14 years old, my Father took me to Atlanta to visit a very elderly aunt. Typical 90 year old aunt house, old furniture and pictures, no TV the best thing was the candy bowl with ancient hard candy that was all of a mass from age and Atlanta summers. The visit was just as painful as I expected except for one thing.... The elderly aunt mentioned that across the street lived an airline pilot, and that he had a Ferrari. I thought that was pretty cool but it really didnt impact my life to a great degree. Until she said this: She said that because he was out of town so much, she had a key to his house. She asked if I wanted to see the car. So, across the street we go, she unlocks the garage, and there sits a real live late model Ferrari! Id never seen such a thing. I dont know what kind it was, but it was a sleek coupe, maybe a Daytona maybe a Dino, I just dont know. Anyway, I was struck by the paint, and the chrome, and just the PRESENCE of the thing. I was also struck by the fact that the garage was finished inside and heated. There were blinds on the windows. There were pictures on the walls. It was nicer than my house! Id never seen any thing to compare. We did not step foot inside the garage, just looked at it from the outside, standing in the driveway. Obviously, the trip took a fair tilt to the good side at that point. So, thats a young southern boys first face to face with what from that time on would be a subject of huge curiosity and desire. Not a particularly interesting story, I know, but it was my first encounter with a Ferrari. I guess its kind of like describing your first sexual episode, probably pretty boring and pathetic to a listener, but pretty profound to the participants.
Isn't it amazing - how in one brief moment - you become hooked on a life long quest - if not to own - but to continue to admire such works of art, passion, and dedication to perfection...
I was about 8 when I saw my first, still remember it like it was yesterday, a black 308 GTS (of course I had no idea then just knew it was a Ferrari) after that I guess I had the Ferrari virus....
My first was when i was growing up in Hawaii (late seventies, early eighties). Our family would go on so called 'round the island trips to drive to some beach or park for a get together. We were passing the Blowhole on the way to Sealife park and that is where I saw her, a 308, red. I just knew it was Thomas Magnum. I yelled out "Look! It's the Magnum PI car!!!"
I first noticed "Ferrari"s at about 13,a Dino used to come past my school twice a day,it was an awful green colour but that did"nt matter as it was so stylish and beautiful, even after 30 years have passed i can still remember it and the registration (CAT 17) If any of you have been to Scotland it was outside Dundee,Broughty ferry to be exact. I was six or seven and Dad came home with a RED 308 GTB. Most awesome thing I ever saw. I was in awe. He sold the car a little less than a year later. It was basically his daily driver. Mom was sick of giving up her car so he could drive around in the snow and rain (Chicago). The seed was planted. Been addicted ever since. I'll never forget the time he showed my the cover of Road and Track. Red Testerossa. I couldn't remember the name of the car to save my life, so I kept asking what it was called. I had remote control cars, posters, models, etc etc etc....all Testerossas. Wish I could track down Dad's old 308...just to see it again. I'm 26 now. Dad died in a car accident when I was 9. Crazy how life has flown by, eh. Wish I could have that 308, and YES....I still want that Testerossa he was supposed to buy before he died. Someday, I hope. J
speddy u have a PM and i love ferraris and if u say no then your death will be so grousome i cant explain it
My interest started in '76 when I bought the R&T with the blue 308GTB on the cover. I have always remembered Bob Bondurant's quote after driving the car..."It was a nice car when it was new." I also remember seeing what I now know was a 275GTS in Portland OR. I was maybe 19 or 20, running sound for local rock bands in the early '80's, probably waiting for a bus or walking somewhere in NE Portland, and this magnificent thing went past. I didn't know the model but I knew it was a Ferrari and it has stuck in my mind ever since. My 348 spider is arriving in a couple of days and I am all over the place with excitement!! Cheers Kevin
