The guys at FOA told me that if your 456 auto box dies, the only option is full replacement with a factory rebuilt unit.... $55K. That said, if I had a 456 and the auto box died, I would have it taken apart by a really good transmission mechanic and if need be have whatever parts we need made. Its just hard to imagine such an effort costing $50K!

Then again... I would want my 456 with the manual.

    Pete....

My wife has the ubiquitous semi-new SUV so when the family goes out we drive that. The family never rides in my beater, so the whole "what people think" arguement from the wife is moot. I really dont give thought to what anyone may or may not think, which I feel is faily typical of guys. Reality is other people think about YOU far less than you think they do.... Besides, I like my beater. Its funny to drive it around with a complete disregard for what may happen to it. Its also something of an experiment in how long a truck can last with no maintenance. I do admit that a bit over a year ago I had the oil changed and a manifold gasket oil leak repaired. IT was the first oil and filter change in 3+ years....

I don't know if anyone will pay any more money than a Daytona spyder conversion for that car despite the sales pitch. It's still a conversion but may have the steel fender underliners. Maybe I'm wrong.

What do you think of the Daytona coupe Sheehan is marketing? Looks a little tired but hard to tell from the pictures.

Last year on the old board, I posted a link to an e-bay auction for an unknown Ferrari transmission. Someone replied that it was a 456 auto trans and they noted the same problems. Said that these transmissions were not field servicable. Ferrari says to pull and replace the entire transmission. And of course guess who pays for it all. The replies to my original posting indicated that the transmission listed for sale was probably one of the inoperable ones that had been pulled. A very risky purchase, but somebody must have bought it.

If I wanted to compare old and new Ferraris, I would pick cars in the same "class".

    GT
    Daytona and 550 / 575

    2+2
    365 GTC/4 and 456 GT

Comparing a Daytona and a 456 doesn't seem fair to either.

When the Brits drove the Daytona off to Italy for a back to back comparison with the "new" 456 it was more to see how far Ferrari had progressed down the development road than to pit one against the other. The Daytona was a known if old bench mark while the 456 was something of an unknown. The 550 Maranello was not produced at that time. However the success of the old Daytona did influence the direction and theme of the new 550. Supporters of the Daytona noted that "the cart did not pull the horse". Which was perhaps what compromised the Boxer evolution TR etc...

Here's what people are asking for Daytona spyders these days...

"1973 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spyder, s/n 17045. Rosso Dino/tan. 10,243 miles. Original unrestored car in show condition. Borrani wire wheels, tools, manuals. Priced right for a car with so few easy miles: $450,000. "

I'm not trying to sell it for the guy, but it's listed on the FCA classifieds online if anyone's interested in investigating further.

Is that how much they're really going for in the 'real world' marketplace ?

Bryon: When the 456 was introduced the factory made a big point of linking it to the daytona, both visually and in concept. Yhat is why it is often compared to it, even though it makes more sense to compare the Daytona to the 550 once the 550 appeared.

Napolis- Sorry, I thought my post indicated that I understood the auto is the problem. Still, my point is that I doubt many will need to buy a transmission. My mechanic has repaired several and claims there is no pixie dust in there, just gears and bearings. I actually thought it has a lot of GM parts[Thats General Motors, not Genetically modified, although maybe....].

Valid point. I missed the connection to the press statements about 456 vs 365 GTB/4...apologies. The 456 WAS the first front engined 12 in a long time...since the Daytona. Of course, when the 550 was introduced, the marketers made the same point again!

Phil Hill's article in Dec 92 R&T has Phil's take on visual cues between 456 and GTOs, F40s, 348, as well as the 365 GTB/4!

    Gentlemen ….
I have been asked (politely) by Rob Lay (FerrariChat’s system administrator) ‘take a breather’ on the subject of the P4 threads, so as to ‘help restore the good karma of the site’. I understand and agree. In fact, when I first read Terry’s post a couple of weeks ago, I thought to myself, then – “He’s right – P4 arguments ARE taking over the Vintage section”. I have made some conscious attempts to back off, especially in view of the thinly-veiled threats of legal action (against myself and others), but there seem to be a few people on this forum who seem to delight in being deliberately provocative.

Also, I am spending WAY to much time on here, (as I said in another post “posting stuff that some people don’t bother to read properly”). As a result, I am getting a bit behind with other things, such as my (mostly P4-related) email. My inbox was on the point of overflowing last week - with 30+ messages needing some sort of reply ....

So, to those readers who’ll be glad to see the back of me – I’m outa here, Guys ! ;) Just don’t post ANYTHING ‘defamatory’ against myself - nor anything deliberately provocative (such as NNO’s ‘Caught Jim Glickenhaus in a Lie’ thread), while I’m ‘away’, ‘cos you know I’ll still be watching from the sidelines, and any slur against me, or posting of what I might deem an ‘incorrect statement’, will bring ‘P4Replica’ right back into the fray again.

By the way – the reason I chose to make this ‘last’ posting in the form of a reply to this particular thread, was purely to do the ‘decent thing’ – and put a NON-P4 related thread back at the top of the ‘Vintage’ thread lists !

    Fair enoughski.

At Coys' Historic Festival at Silverstone in 1997 and 1998 were several of the ex-Le Mans competition cars, IIRC the Maranello Conc. one, a French one and a yellow one, in the Ferrari-Maserati challenge - and they are awesome.

Just standing in the paddock when one rolled slowly by, making the fillings in my teeth vibrate.....................

Nice cars - and I won't even allude as to why Ferrari so named them.........

The 456 was the direct replacement for the 412, also a front-engined V-12 2+2, which had only been out of production for a few years when the 456 debuted. Its styling was influenced by that of the Daytona, hence the comparisons.

When the 550 made its debut, it was the first front-engined V-12 Ferrari 2-seater since the Daytona.

We recognize the nuances, I think much of the general press does not.
