15,000km ago (that's a surprise even to me), when I had the engine rebuild done on the 308, I installed electronic/programmable ignition that I purchased from Black Stallion Motors in Ringwood Victoria.

    http://blackstallionmotors.com.au/bsm_ignitions.html

Now there are all sorts of cheap ignition systems available, but most of them leave any or all of the following obvious weaknesses.

    1. Expensive and now very old distributor cap, that can't take as high a voltage as later types can.
    2. Expensive and now very old rotor button, that can't take as high a voltage as later types can.
    3. Points that require servicing and adjusting every 5,000km (if nothing goes wrong with them) which is expensive to do and a regular source of reliability issues.
    4. Weights on weak and old springs with intricate and delicate mechanisms that do the timing/advance curve by centrifugal force. These vary from day to day and require expensive overhauling/adjusting/checking every 15,000km. These were fine in their day....but now they're just a pain in the neck and never do the same thing twice! Also, with twin distributors like we had in the aussie cars, the variation in timing from bank to bank is inevitable.

The BSM system eliminates all of the above issues, and even has a switch to change to a milder curve just in case you're in the middle of nowhere and can't get good fuel.

I've been elated with the results....and more amazingly, for a 308, it runs the same now as it did the day I picked it up and it does that without having to touch anything to do with tuning/repairing or maintaining the ignition!!!

Don't be conned into anything inferior...this is a one stop and permanent fix!....which is, of course, easily reversed back to standard...just in case you were every stupid enough to want to.

Very nice to hear you are happy with the electronic igniton mate. :):)

I cant believe you have already done 15,000 km's in the old girl! :D:D

That is fantastic! I have merely racked up around 6000 km in my old girl over 4 years.:eek:

That sounds very much like the 123 Ignition systems that have been developed in Holland
    http://www.123ignition.nl/
They are becoming very popular here in the UK, especially amongst Alfa owners at the moment. The 123 guys don't list any Ferrari ones at this stage, but I'm sure it's in the pipeline.

    'easy' is relative!

My original distributors are still original, untouched and intact.

Like I said, no sane person would ever want to revert back.

My lube wick is very important to me.

I agree with PP's comments and how well the new dissy and coil-packs system works, however there is a less intrusive method, which is Crane ignition boxes and optical triggers.

The boxes can be hidden outside of the engine bay, the optical pickups go inside the standard distributors and caps, you keep the mechanical advance mechanism and stock coils. It all looks 100% original but performs dramatically better. My car doesn't foul plugs, doesn't misfire anywhere in the rev range and starts first time every time.

Of course the mechanical advance doesn't give the optimal advance at all times and you need to have it checked on a dissy machine every few years, but it works well enough in practice.

Yes they do. My dissy's were checked before the Port Fairy run, both were perfect. AFAIK the springs are original.

    good to know.
with my Bentley the springs were weak/soft,had them replace performance was far better.
On the other car I fitted electronic ignition,performance/starting up far better, with this car the blue one I wanted to keep her as per factory.

Did that with a 2002 BMW engine chocka with german tuning bits. As with your experience, I was very happy with the result.
Great where you want to maintain a standard appearance.

If I treat Klien as per usual AND IGNORE HIM. The two crane units are in the stainless box, which is ventilated with a "special design". The 308 boot is not exactly large so I did not want to take any more out of it by installing the two units in there. The leads were replaced with 8mm and the car always starts and has never given me grief. I would never go back to points.
It fits nice and snug at the back as you can see.

Here's a Black Stallion job. The owner wanted originality in looks, so the caps are a compromise...but no springs and no weights and no points...and programmable.
