Rob - oh! Well thank you very much.

    Most unexpected - indeed unimagined.

I didn't even realise there were such things.

Does this mean I should expect full ceremonial uniform with glittering regalia? (I must act my age and stop polishing them). Is there a complementary five year's supply of Duff beer or doughnuts? Or even - whisper it - a fee? (relax...joke)

    But thanks again...appreciated.

The most telling shot shows the position of the GTO driver's knees; a characteristic consequence of the car's aft-positioned engine.

    Hi Doug
thanks for the great pic's, i especially like the red car above [ tech term] with the Perspex bubble over the venturies, but it not just the car, its the scenery and the road [ what a road, smooth tarmac, slow bends and best of all no other car in site] where is this place? I will think of it in my dreams!

Nice roll bar on that M3 McLaren! That and the fact that Ludovico is smoking while surrounded by gas (petrol) tanks demonstrate a certain casual attitude toward safety.

I have to show that photo to a young waiter at an Italian restaurant here in town. (Where our car club meets.) Ludovico was his great uncle!

The 'red' - actually more plum-coloured - car is the ex-Count Volpi - Scuderia SSS de Venezia - 250GT California LWB which competed in period in both the Sebring 12-Hours and the ADAC 1,000Kms at the Nurburgring. The location is the Great Ocean Road along the Victorian coast in Australia. It would have been lovely if it had all been this empty. Sadly round almost every blind corner we found another convoy of mimsers, minds in neutral, weaving along aimlessly at as much as 40km/h...

Krasnavian - GTO driving position. Quite so. Proper-sized blokes find it far from ideal. But I have met precious few unwilling to grin and bear it.

I posted this photo recently in Racing & Tracking, but I thought I'd put it up again it here. I took it (at the tender age of 18) in the Silverstone paddock prior to the 1971 British GP. The 312B2 never lived up to expectations, unfortunately. In fact, its appearance heralded a lengthy lean period for the team, which lasted until '74 and the arrival of Lauda. If I'm not mistaken, the drought was broken only by Ickx's victory at the 'Ring in '72 in a B2.

That photo of Scarfiotti in the "fake" Ferrari F1 reminds me of something I read a long time ago. Allegedly, Frankenheimer's production staff had persuaded the various teams to supply drawings or renderings of what their cars were going to look like for the '66 season. This was to enable them to make their "dummy" cars look acceptably close for the splices back and forth between the movie cars and actual race footage. When the shooting was set to start, the Ferraris arrived on the scene with unexpected cut-outs in the cowl area just ahead of the windscreen. As these had not been foreseen when the "dummy" cars were being prepared, all it took was a stencil and some black paint to make the appropriate "modification". The painted on cut-outs are just visible at the extreme right of that photo.

I am a little surprised to notice that nobody has yet taken a punt at identifying either the John Surtees Formula 1 shot I posted (model/venue/event) nor - in what is plainly a very much sports car orientated place - the bent 275LM... Any takers?

In the picture of Scarfiotti seated in the "Grand Prix" car, is that a genuine engine or a prop in the back of the car? It appears to have a valve/cam cover which is far too small for an 8-cyl engine.

That looks like some kind of "breather" box that is installed over a normal valve cover to prevent oil from getting sloshed out when cornering hard. It can't be the valve cover, it is out of place relative to the exhaust pipes...

    OK - here's a big guess - it's.....................
2 Nov 1965 - Rallye Jolly Hotel - Palermo (hence the "very much sports car orientated place" clue?)
    #120 is the 2nd place 250GTO64 (4675) of Latteri/Capuanno - but I haven't identified the 250LM yet - probably Nicodemi or another lesser-known Italian?

The Surtees one is indeed Siracusa 1965; and the 250/TR61 is at Brands Hatch, I know not when.

Frankenheimer got slots cut in the noses of his Lotus 20 fakes to match the slots in the real Ferrari (which had been cut at the non-championship Siracusa GP), but for the Brabham BT11 that also was faked as a Ferrari they used black tape...which can be seen peeling off here:

Spot on Nathan - Bruno - Syracuse GP and the Jolly Club Rally. Casoni and Nicodemi fascinated me as a pairing. Both were capable racing drivers in their own right - Casoni the more prominent. How would two macho Italian racers get along with one driving and the other navigating? How did they divide their roles? I bet the interior of that LM's confined cabin must have been pretty torrid at times...

In my experience most capable racing drivers make extremely poor passengers. They either spend all their time stamping on imaginary brake pedals and cowering under the dash panel, or forcing imaginary throttle pedals through the floorboards while exhorting the driver to "stop faffing about", "boot it!", "geddon with it!", "give it -----oles!", "come ON Doris!" (or in this case the Italian equivalents).

OR - and this is from bitter personal experience - waiting until one has just got the car nicely set up to the best of one's ability through a fast corner on a loose(ish) surface at which moment they yank hard on the handbrake.

Later they respond with wide-eyed innocence to the obvious question: "Oh I just wanted to see how well you might sort it all out..."
