I can't believe it Ernie's gearbox is going home. It is sad to see it go. I'll miss Ernie always having to do things his way. Sometimes it is along time before I get my way. I'll miss the laughs as Ernie has never had a day at my house without doing something twice. I'll miss Ernie's ordering one replacement part at a time. I'll miss Plugzit's visits which always start out with "Hi...well I'm just about ready to have some lunch". I'll miss the laughs I get from Daniel at Ricambi who says..."I'll just send Ernie that part I know he is going to need it"...he is also funning with Ernie over ordering one replacement part at a time. UPS loves Ernie however. Anyway, We all had great fun these last 6 months especially me. Ernie's is a great wrench, a good sport, funny as hell, and sure knows how to use Fer---ra--i Especiale tools...I have to say that so he (Mr. Brazilain JuJitsu) doesn't choke me out nextime we meet.

So here is a picture of where Ernie started and here are a few of where he ended. Nextime I see him will be pictures of his 348 running??????MAYBE????? Oh I think I'm going to get "choked out".

This is Ferrari Especial tool No. vente sis

Actually Ernie came up with this method to hold the loose roller bearing in while sliding in the shaft. I just tilted the gearbox on it side and slipped the rollers in while the races are nearly a roller bearing's width apart. Both methods work. I like Ernie's method better and his Especial tool. Ain't that a hoot! Do you think they use this is the Ferrari factory? No I don't think so. They probably have bearings rolling all over the floor.

    Hahaha.

I forgot you tool a picture of Especiale tool #107 ;). I bet Ferrari has some tool that costs a buttload of money, to put that bearing in, when a good old fashion fat rubber band will do the trick.

We did have some good laughs, but don't think your rid of me yet fatboy.

As for an update on where the gear box is. Monday I prepped the back of the engine block for the new rear main seal. Then yesterday I put the rear main seal on, as well as the new seal for the cover plate that holds the seal. After that I put the gear box in and bolted it down. I figured that was enough and then hit the beach. Tomorrow I'll finish hooking everything back up. It's should be back on the road by the end of the week. That is if I don't have to do things "twice" LOL.

    AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

    I don't fricken believe it!

So the trans is in the car, everything is bolted in ready to go, the axles, muffler, oil lines, cables, subframe cross braces, shift linkage, starter cables, everything. I'm putting in the last thing, the speedo sender.

I'm twisting it in by hand and get it about half way in, and it starts to get a bit tight. Okay no problem I'll just thread it the rest of the way with a wrench. Only problem is that it a 32mm nut and I don't have a 32mm open end wrench. So I get out my big 1" socket set. Put the socket on, give it one turn, two turns, then POP. The FOOKIN head of the sender breaks off flush with the cover, that the tranny oil pump is in. SON OF A BEEOTCH!!!

When the tranny was out of the car I could have had the cover off in mintues. But since I have everything in the car, the left side header, and cat is in the way. So either I figure out how to reverse the damn thing out of there, or I have to pull the header and cat. What ever the case now I have just created more work for myself.

When will I ever get this car back on the road? AAAAAHHH!

Sounds like a job for No Doubt's famous JB Weld trick. JB Weld appropriate item to flush, broken sender, wait until dry, then turn.

As a matter of fact I had just discussed that with FatBB and JackRR. I think I'm gonna give that a try first, cause I really don't wanna have to pull the header and cat.

It's funny... as ernie and I were talking, I said something like,

"ok, don't think I'm a complete hack Ernie, but what about using JB Weld to grab the broken piece then unseat it?"

His response? "Yeah man, FBB and I were thinking the same fvkong thing"

Wow... the Duct Tape Methodology must transcend the whole U.S.

FBB started a whole thread on JB Weld tricks. It's a great parts puller when you've got broken or stuck parts.

Naw that won't work because of where it is. Well it could work, but then I would destroy the threads inside the cover, and I don't feel like getting a new cover.

Heeeeeeyyyy, wait a minute, oh your a slick one Plugzit. Trying to get me to ruin the current cover so you can sell me the challenge cover you have. Pretty sneeky.

    I got it out yesterday!

I spent all day Moday looking for a bolt extractor/internal pipe extractor with no luck. I went EVERYWHERE looking for the right sized tool. It would find them either just barely too big, or just barely too small, or.........the right diameter but too long.

I went to a machine shop, later in the day, and asked them what they thought would be a good way to get it out. The machinist gave me the same advise Plugzit did. He said to try collapsing the walls of the sender in with a punch, since it was brass, then grab the collapsed sides with some pliers and twist it out. I went home and gave it a try. The walls did start to collaps, but the brass was so soft that it would just break off small bits. So before I screwed it up even more I stopped.

Then yesterday I went to an industrial bolt shop and bought a left handed thread 3/4" bolt, and double nutted the end of it. I was gonna hammer that in the opening and then reverse the busted sender out. But before I when home I stopped at this really big plumming supply company to look for the correct sized extractor. Again they had the right diameter but it was too long. They referd me to another place and JACK POT, just the right size extractor! Took it home, and I had the broken sender out in less than 5 minutes!

I sure am glad I was able to find the right tool, because it would have been frustrating to have to pull the header, cat, and side cover off, THEN, put it all back in, when with the right too it was out in minutes. Sometimes it's better spending your time to find the right tool for the job.

Oh yeah the extractor was $14. The reverse thread bolt and nuts, that I didn't need to use, were only $2 so no biggie. Now I'm just waiting for the new sender to arrive from Dan.

Yeah, but how much time did you spend calling people, driving around, and posting before that 5 minute fix and how does that compare to how long it would have taken to pull the header, cat, and cover? :)

OTOH, you have a new tool, which is always good.

I spent six hours the first day, and about 50 miles of driving. The second day about 30 minutes.

I did think about what you just said when I was looking the first day, but I really didn't want to bust the seals on the cover, I'm one of those owners that doesn't like a "leaking" Ferrari. Not only would I have had to pull everything, but then reclean and seal it again, then put everything back in, then I still would have had to get the busted sender out. It really was better for me to find the correct tool for the job, and like you said I now have a new tool.

Also in ernie's defense, pulling the header means 4 new exhaust gaskets which are $18/ea. Who knows what else he'd break once in there...
