I ship a lot of stuff from UK to Mexico with UPS. It always sits in US customs for at least 3 days before heading down to Mex. Seems like the norm.

Did you order direct from Italy then?

This is a good discussion of a recurring issue. One of THE main factors in the enjoyment of my car is the sound.

Although beautifully built, I also tired of my tubi's metallic tonal sound and sheer volume - ok for the occaisional toy, but simply not the best choice for long trips or commutes for a daily. I decided to go for a more classic smooth lower GT tone, the target sound being a 365 GTC4 - ish.

While I went through a learning curve on exhaust design, for what I wanted it took three variations of mufflers and tailpipes constructed by a race shop (at about $500 each) before I finally got the combo that hit the sweet spot: a smooth lower toned note quiet at idle, low toned moderate volume off throttle cruise at 3500-4000 rpm (conversation possible, unlike the tubi), and at open throttle a louder smooth non-metallic 'woooom'. James Patterson of Norwoods even remarked that it had the more classic old school Ferrari sound uncommon to the newer F-1 sounding tubi V-8s. Dynos showed no hp loss over the tubi.

The point of all this is that it is not that hard to have a good race fabricator construct a bespoke system for your car with the exact sound you want and maintain optimized performance. That is what the specialty hoses are doing, nothing magic. All for about 1/3 or less of the off the shelf units. Lots of threads in the tech section of different combos with different sounds.

I applaud what Daniel and Ricambi are doing in stepping away from the traditional fashion labels and offering a new quality alternative to compliment and framed by his already world class customer service reputation. This will be great.

ok... no remember, before people start saying, "those welds suck", or "that looks like a fart-can", or anything like that, let me first say this is less then 1/2 the price of the major brand in the Ferrari exhaust market.

Unless I get really, really bored, it won't be installed until the 18th by Sport Auto (ferrarioldman). If I am indeed bored, I'll do it myself. (Yes, I can hear Tom and Steve Jones laughing their butts off...)

Without further delay, let me present the X-OST system (www.x-ost.com)

Daniel that looks great! High quality piece if you ask me. Can't wait to hear it. I'd offer to come help put it on, but I'm headed to charleston to pick up my car. It shouldn't take more than 2-3 hours max.

Would you mind revealing the final "recipe" for the exhaust that pleased your ears? I also have a Mondial, and like others on this thread, just can't get my mind around spending $3+K on a freakin exhaust system.......maybe it's from all those years of working on Chevys that makes me stop and think "heck, I bought complete engines for a lot less than that!......."

There is a thread somewhere with all of the details, but for a single 3" inlet US spec 3.2 the combination is shown below. To oversimplify a bit, the large bore high volume packed muffler selects a low note relatively quiet tone while the rear Ansa Daytona style resonators really smooth out the sound - not exactly like a 12 but close. Because it is open all the way through, when you open the throttle it sounds like a smooth 'woom' church organ. Yet, it is relatively quiet at idle and cruise. I was going for a classic GT sound and I am very happy to listen to this even on a 4 hour trip to Dallas where the tubi used to beat me up.

And it passes the famous ball test: you can roll a ball from one end to the other unobstructed. That is my backpressure test. :)

I am planning to get a set of Euro headers with two inlets that will allow me to have a complete dual system. For this I would suggest the same volume muffler, but with two inlet pipes and two exit pipes that do not intersect within the muffler and then go to the Ansa resonators.

I am beginning to believe that at least a part of the fabled 1970s Ferrari 365 sound were the long Ansa resonators following flow through boxes. Here is a diagram of the system I have, and a photo of the Ansa tips (before I re-installed the rear grille) angled up at a very classic Ferrari aggressive stance

    good luck and have fun.

Dan, you're doing the right thing getting the X-OST!!!

Yesterday I heard the X-SOST on a 360 (with cats) in a comparison test with a standard 360. It sounded great!!!!!

Love to hear it on a 348. Might even be tempted to trade in my tubi.

Just went to check on all my mounting points and stuff. Looks like the X-OST will be an absolute snap-in replacement. I did get myself new brackets and tension springs, simply because I thought the old junk was probably in less than perfect condition.

(Kicking myself, if I had started this project early this morning, I'd be done. But NOOOOO.... I wanted to do some crap around the house. What a dummy I am)

OMFG. Gentlemen, we have a winner.

The good news? ferrarioldman has fitted everything, and I am posting pictures below. You'll see my old crap system (homemade exhaust + test pipes), and my new system. The new system features HYPER-FLOW 348 cats and an X-OST muffler.

The Hyper-Flow's were added because frankly, they flow so damn well and sound so good (I've heard plenty of customer cars), that I can no longer justify the emissions nightmare of test pipes. My car does not have exhaust ECU's, and I have plugged the thermocouple ports on the HyperFlow units.

The X-OST system is simply gorgeous. Notice how the pipes properly fill the bumper cutouts, compared to a skinny stock 348 system. A normal 348 has very thin pipes and looks a little anemic. The weight of the X-OST (posted in an above picture) is also a bonus.

Now, the sound. ferrarioldman telephoned me this afternoon and said "this sucker is LOUD". My reaction? "Come on Tom, you listen to Tubi's all day long, V8's V10's, V12's, flat-12's.... and you're saying this system is loud? You're just pulling my leg, right?" He said, "Daniel, I'm telling you, this sucker is LOUD. Take a listen......"

He then reved the engine a few times. After I finished laughing hysterically, I said, "Tom, you're just playing a soundtrack of Schumacher in the Monaco tunnel, right?" His reaction, "No. That's your car."

Mind you, this was over the telephone, but it was simply apocalyptic.

The bad news? In doing a track inspection for my car, he found something in the LR wheel bearing (or worse) that needs attenion. So, I do not have the car back at the world headquarters of Ricambi. Nor do I have a posted sound clip.... (booooo). My "before" clip has been sent to another Fchatter for conversion, and I hope he posts it here soon.

(I hope the car is ready tomorrow, but it's certainly not the end-of-the-world if it takes a few days to ensure it's track worthy)

In the meantime, check out the pictures:
