How much time do you have? Your route is the quickest, but all the superslabs, i.e., I-40, are very, very, very, boring. I can suggest some alternative routes, but... it will take longer to get there.

You will not have fuel range issues at all but like Dr Who stated it will be quite boring of a drive for yourself.

I'm leaving on Wed, have to make it to LV by Friday for the SR. I could push the leave day up 1 if I needed too to make the route more fun. I just don't want to be too far from civilization in a 17 year old Italian car :D

Wow Tillman, I'm really impressed and jealous you are doing this. I wish I had the balls and time.

I've found my 328 has a highway range of 250-300 per tank. I would keep a spare "oops" tank in case of emergency. You might also want a blanket, gloves, hat, water, and some food. I learned that living in Kansas, it can get really cold at night and those items don't take much space.

Check out this picture a coworker sent from Scottsdale. Evidently all the rain has caused a rare occurrence of the dessert blooming out.

Several cars from the AZ FCA are driving up to Vegas from Phoenix for the Rampage. Perhaps you'd like to meet up with them (in Kingman?) for the final part of the run? If so, I'll try to get them to post their schedule, or otherwise contact you.

    Where's Kingman?

Right now it looks like Dallas -> Abilene (pick up another car, maybe)->Albuquerque day 1, then I have a choice.

Day 2 Albuquerque to Las Vegas, arriving Thurs evening OR

Day 2 Aluquerque to Phoenix, stay over and arrive Las Vegas that Friday morning.

On the second of your maps in the first post above, Kingman is where you head north from I-40 to Vegas. It's just about where the marker indicating "93" is. Does that help?

Tillman, a little data input for you...

Houston to Southlake. Jennie driving, all highway 75 to 95 mph.

    255.7 miles
    11.323 gallons of gas
    ---
    22.58 miles per gallon

How large are our tanks? I think 15-17. Maybe the range is 300+.

Tillman, what day are you planning to be in Albuquerque and Santa Fe? I live in the area, and would like to stop by, and visit.

The plan right now is to be in Albuquerque Wed evening, crash at a Motel 6 or something, and then roll out in the morning.

The very first exit from I-40 into the east side of Albuquerque will drop you onto Central Avenue and a Motel Six that-- get this-- has an all-night security guard walking around the complex.. and he's.a real security guard with a real gun too! So, your car's safer there than almost anywhere else in Albuquerque-- which can be a nasty town in many respects (ie Fox "Cops" TV show)

If you want a laugh in the morning (and breakfast at Village Inn and some good cheap gas, purchased away from the interstate exits) drive west on Central and see the tall building, 20-30 blocks ahead of you on the right. That's next door to the Village Inn, which has side and front parking that will let you keep an eye on your car (Central is not a pretty place at night). The tall building is 5301 Central and that's where Microsoft got started.

After breakfast, turn right at the corner and go north on San Mateo. Look on the left for FERRARI AUTO GLASS, using the Ferrari logo and everything! I turned them into Ferrari N/A. But I'll bet the yellow sign is still up at 1717 N San Mateo. That's the laugh! ha ha ha .

There's (good) gas stations on both Central and San Mateo, then you can get on I-40 and scream west! The I-40 interchanges in Albuquerque are beautiful and the road is brand new. So, if you've missed rush hour traffic in thge morning, you can scream across four lanes and have fun!

I'll bet you have the most fun on 287 from Dallas to Dalhart. I've followed rich Texans, coming back from Colorado ski vacations on that road! WOW! FAST!!! Watch out for Dalhart though. As the local judge told me once in her chambers, "Honey, speeding tickets is how we make our money in this county. And there's no provision in Texas state law for speeding while passing!" I was doing 5 or 8 miles or so, over the limit--after just passing someone-- and got a $70 ticket AND a drug search. And a nice visit with the judge. There's a cool courthouse with WW1 machine guns, etc.

Sorry for the delay in answering your question, been under the weather for couple days.

Here's how I'd do it. But I should caution you that, like nature, I abhor a straight line.

    *****
    Dallas I-20 to Abilene

    Abilene 84 to Clovis, NM

Clovis, NM 84 to Ft. Sumner (Billy the Kid Land)

Ft. Sumner 84 to 1-40 @ Santa Rosa

    ****
Fast, but boring way, I-40 boggie to Lost Wages

    ****

My way – Santa Rosa to Santa Fe

From Santa Fe find your way to 44 (or you could take 84 to 64)

Take 44 to 64 and then to 4 Corners (This is a good spot to take a small amount of LSD before continuing onward and upward).

From 4 Corners take 160 to Tuba City.

At Tuba, you have a choice. If the weirdness is getting too much for you, take 89 to Flagstaff and then I-40 to Sin City. (With maybe a detour to see the Big Ditch)

But if you are getting into the groove, take 89 North at Tuba and wind your way over to St. George Utah.

From there, you can pick up the Super Slab the rest of the way in.

However, if you go North from St. George, we’ll probably never hear from you again.

    Hi Tillman,

Well, I have to agree with Dr. Who, I-40 is a boring drive. If you decide to take his advice, and take the alternate route, let me know. I live at the Four Corner, Farmington NM to be precise. I was planning to drive to Albuquerque, and visit my daughter, and at the same time visit with you. But, if you take the route thru here, you are welcome to spend the night. I will keep the beer on the ice. Let me know.

By the way, Albuquerque is a bit worse than Dr. Who described. The reason motel 6 has an armed guard, is because Central Ave. is located in a very high crime area. I would not be able to sleep, knowing that my Ferrari is parked outside.

    Regards

    Milton

oooch. Garage report on my car came back with a bunch-o-problems, all involving parts made of Unobtanium. Strange thing is that the car is running fine, just rich, but subtle, pricey and time-consuming issue lurk. I'm thinking it over but don't think that it can be together in time for the run. Maybe next year, pricing flights now....
