I saw an ad for a product that junctions two USB monitor cables into one CPU and thought it would be cool to have two live monitors on my desk. Just seeing if anyone has this setup and if their are any mouse problems in operating the two screens.

I use 2 19 inch monitors side by side, for a huge viewing space. Basically it is all one screen separated by two monitors. Moving mouse from screen to screen is not a problem. You use it just like you use a regular one monitor computer. Have had this setup for about 16 months, and it works great.

tvrfreak has this same set up as well.

When at home, I have a 19 LCD panel(that is a TV as well) that I plug my laptop into and watch movies off the laptop on the wall. I keep the lap top screen open and can surf while watching a movie. very easy, and only 2 cables.

Could you please post of pic of your desktop so I can get a visual? In trying to understand your setup, does the setup split a single screen?

I will as soon as I get back to my dorm room. There are two modes via the ATI software- 1 being the second monitor just mimics the first- and the 2nd mode being that you it physically doubles your desktop area- you can drag anything over to the other monitor as if it's the first- very easy to set up and much more convenient...

I can't work with one monitor anymore, I highly recommend it.

BTW- I have mine set up through a dual monitor capable AGP (?) card in my laptop..

What screen resolution do you use? I bet it is tough to get a good backround in 2048 x 768 or something like that.

USB? doesn't need to be USB. just get a dual head video card in order to set it up correctly. I've used this in the past and it is great. I just couldn't take the heat of two 21" monitors in the room anymore. the electric bill went down significantly once I settled for one 19" lcd.

ati has some dual heads as well as nvidia. searching here: http://newegg.com/app/manufact.asp?catalog=48&DEPA=1 for 'dual' in the keyword should bring up a handful of results at a cheap cost. some are under 60, while one I recently purchased for an individual here at work was 73 bucks. not that much for basic desktop (non-video/non-rendering) applications.

I have a 19" KDS CRT and a 23" HD Cinema display both hooked up to my G4. The new G5 is going to have one 30" HD. The 19" died after this photo was taken about a month or two ago, and has been replaced by a spare 17" I had sitting around.

Does anyone know of any KVMs that support Apple and PC as well as ADC connections?

You just need a dual headed video card, most of the good ones now are. And a second monitor.

Pretty much any new nVidia or ATI card will support dual monitors. You might need an adapter, because they generally tend to have one VGA and one slot of another type.

An AGP dual video card is the best way to do this, but you can do it cheaply by just adding a second video card to your computer and hooking up your second monitor to the second video card. The second card usually needs to be PCI, not AGP.

Your computer should recognize both cards if you are running Windows XP, and you can go to your video properties (right-click on your desktop and select properties) and define the monitors' positions relative to each other so that the computer knows how to handle the cursor and windows when they get moved to a monitor's edge. Peter, I am including a screen shot to show what you need to look at and set in order to get the cards and monitors to work.

I can't imagine working without a dual monitor setup as I often have to refer to several documents. Having them all open and visible at the same time really helps.

Here's my setup (2 Dell 20" flat-panel LCDs running at 1600X1200 each)...guess which car I like! And no, the pictures are not hung crooked...the camera lens just make them seem that way :):

I have an ATI Radeon dual-head video card that I bought about three years ago to use with my ArchiCad architectural software. I had it hooked up to a Dell 21" CRT for my main CAD desktop/2D drawing area and a GEM 17" CRT to the right for the 3D window. This video card was less than $150.00 installed at CompUSA and performed very well. My main problem was poor processor speed for the 3D app. and my wife now has that computer. I now have a Dell notebook with much greater capability but with only single monitor display ability (my wife bought the notebook and then decided she didn't like it). It's hooked up to a 19" Samsung LCD flatscreen that I just bought. I need to see about a dual-head card now. Its a great thing to have for apps that support it.
