Haven't been watching the market recently, but when I last looked, I got the impression that my 99 456M with 26K miles is worth around £50K. It's a good one, in top condition. Using that as a benchmark makes a '95 car on at £47K seem expensive. There does appear to be huge variation in prices though, especially as %, even more so than with other models such as 355s.

I suspect the market hasn't equilibrated, and would be tempted to take these prices as a guide, checking any that look interesting, regardless of what they're on at. Even a non-expert can do a quick screen of the known problem areas such as do the windows work, does it overheat, any oil leaks and are the shocks OK. If you like it they can only say 'no' to an offer you consider realistic. I'd be wary of bottom feeding though, as the penalties are high. Personally, I would rather pay slightly over market for a good example.

456mgt is spot on. I did lots of research before I bought a 456 and you need to ensure that you check everything. It does not matter whether it is from a main dealer or not, still do your homework. Do not assume any photocopied service history is genuine, phone the dealer to confirm. Remember the difference between a 60K miler and a 20K miler is a lot of money so there is incentive for people to give them a haircut.

    Guys,
I heard that the 456 has problems with the radiator. It is somehow bolted to the chassis in such a way that it flexes with steering and eventually cracks. Can this be rectified or is it something that will continue to happen throughout a cars life?

I think the 456 is absolutely gorgeous....nice choice

    Cheers
    Simon

Various folks in various threads have asked me to post pics of the 575 19" wheels that I've put on my 456, and this seems the most appropriate thread to post them to, concerned as it is with 456 purchasing issues. Pics are not great composition, and let's face it, of fairly niche interest, but I hope they at least give a flavour of the difference (improvement IMHO) over standard 17" wheels. You might be able to make out the 612 brakes as well....

    Enjoy.

    Kevan,

Well thank you kindly, sir. I'm glad you like them. I certainly do.

Having an "end of a long, hard day Homer Simpson, Doh!, moment" myself and can't remember either, but after a quick search of my own posts (don't you just lurve Fchat - it's such a good site) I found this:

    http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showpost.php?p=134486517&postcount=27

    and this:

    http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showpost.php?p=251851&postcount=25

which has the correct tyre / wheel size information.

I still don't actually know what 'model or part number' the wheels are known by exactly, but assume that proper folks in the Fcar business would be able to find out.

Cheers James appreciate the info - ball park figure on price? PM me if you prefer. Bet it was cheaper than the Hamann 18" wheels though - anyone know the price on them?

Fantastic ! IMHO still the best looking car in decades and your 456 is the best of its kind ive ever seen - the wheels (same as my 575) make it just right - thanks for sharing the pictures.

    Gary,
You are totally welcome. It's kind of funny, or kind of nice, that Fchatters have been so complimentary on the looks of the car (which obviously I agree have been improved) as my primary reason for buying these wheels and tyres - and uprating the brakes - was to improve the driving dynamics. The looks were secondary really.
In a way I'm a bit bonkers (Fchatters who know me nodding furiously now) because I want the 4-seater so I get usage from the car, but I want the driving dynamics of the 355 I had before, if not better, so this was the main driver (excuse the pun) for my upgrades. In the right hands, i.e. my friend David, my 456 was pretty surprising round an F1 circuit recently with pretty much every other Fcar on the circuit moving out of the way to let him past. I was amazed, and the brakes were just incredible....
Overall, I'm happy with what I have, which is what life is all about, but may one day get a really full-on track car (360 challenge, Radical, Ultima, 575GTC depending on lottery results), but that would clearly have to be in addition to the 456 not instead!
I still think the 456 is the under-rated Fcar of recent times, considering it's closer in overall performance to a 550, than would initially be expected of a 2+2 GT. Anyone reading this thread because you're considering buying one, my advice is, go for it (with usual caveats of getting professional advice as for any major purchase).
    Happy motoring all.
    J.
