the "high" bidder's profile page. perhaps his chosen picture explains the bid better than any words can. |

Nice repro.
Non original cars are generally worth what it takes to make one. The history of the car, or their existence before today being deemed to be, in essence worthless.
The only reason to pay more would be for the instant gratification. So what is that worth? Plus the price of a nut and bolt identical copy. The reality is that it is worth what someone is willing to pay. Perhaps 2.5 to someone. My money says not. This car on a great day is probably 500K. But what do I know? I'd be willing to bet that you could still make the identical car for 300-400. It would be new also. Not in need of a restoration as that old one surely does by now. How old is that rubber, etc.? By the way, were there any subtle improvements on the car If not, then we might say that a superior car could have been had. Food for thought. For the record. I have no interest in purchasing the subject car, and have no doubt that the new owner, when one is found, will love the ride. It is quite apparent that that will take some time. |

I may be one of the few here to think so, but $2.5M is a cheap way of recreating the GTO experience, assuming a bolt-for-bolt replication. I say this from the perspective of having driven a real GTO as my daily driver for a number of years. I didn't buy the car for its financial value or the impression it made on others, but for the sheer excitement the car generated each time I turned and pushed the ignition key.
I haven't heard anyone bemoan the fate of the SWB body that was sacrificed for the Breadvan. Yes, that car raced and the modification was done in period resulting in an enhanced value. However, if we consider what value there is in pleasing oneself--as opposed to concours judges, portfolio-istas or theorists of all sorts--it may be seen that a sincere duplication can have a great value to the one who gets to drive it. |

There is a very similar 250 GTO in DC which looks amazing and if I hadn't heard about it before I walked into the service area I don't know if I could tell it was a replica, although I am far from an expert on the subject.

Funny how "fake" has morphed to "replica" has morphed to "recreation" has morphed to "reinterpretation" has morphed to "tribute." Alas, replicas seem to be gaining wider acceptance at previously selective events like California Mille, Colorado Grand and even Goodwood Revival. Hey! They're newer and better, right?

This GTO took my Breath away...
http://www.autotraderclassics.com/details?adId=90189702
Went to Check out a few cars at Champion this week....and this repro, for lack of a better word took my breath away...The balance of the body lines compared to the original is perfect...I believe it fooled the best of them until the owner announced that he had his original copied for fear of track damage...Can someone post the real story.... A MUST SEE if you can... Last edited by msdesignltd; 10-08-2008 at 11:29 AM. |

I once heard about a guy in Europe, England, I think, who had an exact replica of his 250 GTO built so that he could enjoy the learning process of driving it and getting to know it, without the sorrow-filled possibility of wrecking it during his 'education'. I don't know if this is that same car though. Perhaps some of our more knowledgeable Ferraristi can shed some light on the details.
