Fernando Alonso will use this special helmet design for the Monaco Grand Prix weekend.

Like last year, the helmet is gold-coloured. The design incorporates the Cross of the Angels as it appears on the flag of the principality of Asturias, where Alonso’s home town is.

The cross is shown on a coin bearing an inscription of the Latin motto of the Kingdom of Asturias, which translates as “With this sign thou shalt defend the pious, with this sign thou shalt defeat the enemy.”

On the top of the helmet is an illustration of a Ferrari 158 (seemingly based on this photograph). The team won the constructors’ championship with it in 1964 and John Surtees claimed the drivers’ title.

The rear of the helmet refers to Alonso’s two wins at Monaco in 2006 and 2007. It also displays other statistics relating to his career and the race, including this being the 70th running (“edition”) of the Monaco Grand Prix.

Jean-Eric Vergne is using Jean Alesi’s helmet design for the Monaco Grand Prix weekend.

The Toro Rosso driver’s helmet has been designed to match that of Alesi, who last raced in F1 in 2001.

Alesi is making his debut in the Indianapolis 500 this weekend. Vergne said: “I had thought it would be great to go and watch Jean race in Indy, but then came the news I was driving for Toro Rosso and of course that meant a clash with Monaco.

“But I was still determined to do something special to mark Jean’s Indy debut and so we came up with the idea, which is quite common here in Monaco in fact, of me using a special design in tribute to him. I think it looks great and I hope it brings us both good luck this weekend.”

The helmet includes the slogan “Forza Jean Indy 500 2012″...

...Here’s a few more design changes being used by Sergio Perez, Pastor Maldonado, Romain Grosjean and Charles Pic.

Pic’s design features the names of Monaco Grand Prix winners on the top, with six-times winners Ayrton Senna picked out on the top.

Maldonado’s is one of four special designs he will use during the season, the others appearing in Britain, Italy and the USA. The design will reflect the elements earth, wind, fire and air.

According to its designers: “The Earth Beat is the beat of life in Venezuela and Pastor’s love for his nation. For this reason, Kaos Design has created a graphic tribute for the Williams driver, the winner of last Grand Prix and his country.”
