S1000RR

Anyone have one?

I ride about 50% of my time on track (I live about 5 km from a track which hosts many track days) and am looking for something new. I tracked and raced Ducatis for years (Montjuich, 888, 748, 996, 749, 999, D16RR) but am getting lazy and want something which is fun but more reliable. A Panigale is not in the cards until they work a few more bugs out.

Other than tires and brake pads, if the S1000RR is anything like a street BMW it should require little attention and generally be stone axe reliable. I did ride the 2012 a few weeks ago and found the electronics fun and the motor reasonably quick. (I rode it in street trim back to back with something much more powerful so the BMW seemed slightly flat).

Do they hold together? The other 50% of my seat time is spent riding to get coffee, I suspect it may be slight overkill for that.

I really just want a really light 2 valve air cooled ducati track bike, but a Pierobon f04 is not road legal and will cost a bit more than the BMW. Too bad Ducati does not make anything like that anymore.

If you are looking for a track bike, check the classified at roadracingworld.cojm or one of the other enthusiasts sites.

The S1000RR has a recall. The conrod bolts are defective and break/loosen. Check the NHTSA site for VIN #'s effected.

It felt flat? Are you sure you didn't have it is rain mode?

Stick it in SLICK mode and see if it feels flat. I doubt it. On the top end no other manufacturer has matched it (stock). Several bikes make more torque below 10,000 rpm though.

Back to the subject at hand, the BMW had engine failures early in its production in 2010. AFAIK they rectified those issues, like someone else said they have had recalls.

The 2012 S1000RR does indeed have a recall campaign in effect for its conrod bolt issue.

The local dealer could not sell them off the floor, they were shipping them back for repair.

I like the bike, but I'm having a hard time getting past some cheap touches on it. The square-tube subframe for one--that really bothers me, looks low-budget. Also comes with cheap suspension. Not sure of the brakes, they may be Brembo...

My wife has one and u will not be disappointed with it! Hers is a 2011 with close to 192hp and it was my buddies former track bike! The motor is incredible and she handles very well also, the only downside is finding parts and finding someone that can really tune and maintain the s1000r. I have the 2011 zx10 and I had to sink quite a bit of cash I to it to match the wires BMW I also just purchased and aprilia rsv4 and no comparison to the s1000r. IMO it is the basest bike out their and that includes all the itaian bikes.

I rode it in slick mode (the other bike was a modified and lightened Desmodsedici - 225 hp which does make the BMW seem slightly flat). I think the first 1400 or so bikes had rod bolt recalls. I am about to order a fresh s1000rr so fingers crossed it is ok.
