I don't know, it looks like it could be made into a pretty cool planter.
Paint it brown, plunk it down in the front yard.
Before you know it it's pushing up daisys.
Of course none too soon!

All that talent and all they can do is copy ... pity. They obviously have the ability to take on TVR, etc.

Heck they would probably make great restorers too. Each to their own I guess.

That's pretty bad! Can't be cheap either?

The application of body panels, paint and plastic to an existing car is ugly, stupid and embarrasing for the driver and anyone admiring it. This is truly a "kit" car, one where the pieces obviously come in box.

However, I certainly believe that there is a place in this world for quality replicas, not kits. I happen to own one, however not for long as it is on e-bay right now, check it out:

One day I'd like to build a Daytona Coupe replica. Just being involved in every nut and bolt, being able to specifiy every component, and putting it all together into a recognizable high performance machine. It's a different experience from owning my Ferrari or Maserati, and one that I will always relish.

Who is the company that makes the great F40 replica. I think it is in NZ or Australia. Exotic Dream Builders had the talent, but they are no longer in business. Nice guys.

yeah well, bit of a difference between a ground-up built replica vs an existing car with body panels added to look like something else.

cobra replicas are common and rarely bad quality, imagine something like a miata with a GT stripe, sidepipes and a 427 badge... actually, has that ever been done?

there needs to be some distinction between a replica and a cosmetically modified car.

NZ ... but cannot remember the name, something like F40 developments (?).

Yep you can buy them in Australia (don't remember the details), i.e a v8 powered car that to me looks so close to a Miata it might as well be one.

"The cover is actually bolted to the engine such that as the engine moves, the cover moves enhancing the illusion that what they are seeing is really an authentic Lamborghini."

This is exactly what makes it a crappy replica in my eyes, trying to make people think it is something it's not!

WOW! I skimmed thru this thread - it took a while. Looks like passions running wild and clashing over what is right. We are all passionate about our cars. I too am a guy coming from both worlds. I had a 355. Loved it. Saw a GT40 MK1 and I really wanted one.
Where can i find one? I could afford a "real" one. But it would probably be in sad shape. Where do you find one in Canada? If I could find one, the car has probably been raced and abused for the last 40 years. Under what condition would it be in? Would I get the enjoyment of my new "dream car" if the car needed a major resoration?
Well, I started to look into the replicas. For me, to buy a replica, it really needed to be close. I would like to know how many people on this board would love a 250 GTO replica, with correct body, correct borrani GTO spec wire wheels, correct 250 spec 12cyl Ferrari motor with webbers, correct interior with proper gauges and steering wheel, etc....But built new. For me, I could accept that. I found a manufacturer (CAV) that can build a complete Gt40 to the spec that I wanted. I loved a certain gulf wide body spec car and am currently having an exact as possible replication of s/n1076 that I can. This car will have the same ford 302 engine with the same webbers, BRM wheels interior..... all the way down to the sponsorship decals of the period. This car will fulfill my GT40 "dream". There is nothing wrong with anyone trying to fulfill their dream. We all have passions. It's what gets us up in the morning. Its what makes us create. It would be impossible for most people on this board to own a real 250 GTO, but I'm sure that more than one person here would jump at the chance of an opportunity to own a great GTO replica.

Oh, good for you FROG. I have a lot of repect for a guy who's driven by his passion and created something from it.

Well, I started to look into the replicas.
The reason for your last statement (in quoted paragraph above) confounds me completely. Thus lets say you found a genuine GT40 Mk1 that obviously had been raced by REAL racers in REAL races and had REAL history and you look at it like it is somehow abused, no longer any good?

I cannot understand that. That is what makes these cars so fncken awesome. Not the steel and plastic, etc. that make up the car, but the history and what they achieved and by whom.

If the GT40 had sucked as a race car, I can tell you nobody would want one at all ... and there would not be any replicas.

Thus a genuine, historied GT40 is way more interesting than any new thing that just is a few bits of steel and plastic. Even once you drive it and give it some history ... er, (to be polite) what you do with it will mean fnck nothing, 'cause its racing days are over.

History is what makes a car ... not just the design, and that is why replicas pale in to insignificance. Yes I can see the alure of making a GT40 replica (one I would love to have myself ... and concrats on your one), but I would never dismiss an original old car as LESS worthy 'cause it has a bit of history.

Even if it was crashed into a little ball of steel in a 60's race ... well it still has more to say than a replica.

but how many people want a replica as a piece of drivable art and as homage to something unattainable and precious, and how many want it so they can say they drive one?
