This one I took on the 3rd September 1982, in Moulins, during the 20th anniversary of the 250 GTO in France, when I had the great pleasure to ride with Brian Brunkhorst in his 3705 GT with the racing stripe. That's the one in the center. Shortly thereafter 3705 GT was sold to Japan. And yes, of course, at that anniversary meet were more than just five GTOs attending. PS: I have a few more pix........ Breathtaking?
Here's another one I took on the 18th September 1992 during the 30th Anniversary of the 250 GTO at Fiorano. And yes, I also attended the 40th and the 45th Anniversary.

I always thought the execution of the horizontal slot above the main intake was rather odd looking on this particular example. Am I to assume it was done for cooling reasons?

When I was a kid of about fifteen and living in Sheffield (UK), the Harrison's owned the local Ford Dealership - T. C. Harrisons (hence the registration plates). I knew they had two GTO's as they appeared occasionally in the classic car mags, so I wrote to them asking if I could see their Ferrari collection not thinking for a minute that I would get a reply. After about a month I did receive a reply asking me to meet their chief mechanic in the workshops behind the showroom at a particular time on the designated day. I rode my bike into town and sure enough the mechanic was expecting me, I was greeted and walked through to the workshop area and there... not one but two GTO's (one each for the two brothers - how unspeakably cool...), along with a Daytona coupe & Daytona spider, 246 Dino, 275 GTB, early fibreglass 308 GTB and a gulf liveried GT40. There were probably other cars too but the memory is a bit fuzzy now. I clearly remember being asked if I wanted to sit in a few of the cars, so without any further encouragement I pointed at the left-hand drive GTO (later I figured it out to be 3909 as the other was RHD and therefore 3505). My abiding memory is that it was a real squeeze to get my leg through the narrow gap between the seat and the huge, low steering wheel! When I finally managed to get my bum positioned properly, my legs were splayed apart with my knees up around my ears somewhere. I remember thinking, jesus how can anybody actually drive this thing. Heresy now of course ... What I do clearly remember was just how much more comfortable and normal-sized the 275 GTB felt after the GTO, I thought now there is a car designed for me! These days nearly 30 years later and after plenty of hard work I have a Daytona of my own which like the 275 GTB is a pretty comfortable place to be (well compared to a GTO anyway!). So thanks Marcel for rekindling memories of the Ferrari-loving kid I was back then. David |

Prancing Horses
Mr Clarke mentioned earlier as the owner of P4 0856 also had a 250 GTO. His GTO (3869) was first seen at the 1962 London Motor Show. He tried to buy this GTO in 1962. However it was instead purchased and campaigned by Ron Fry. However Mr Clarke would finally purchase this GTO for himself 3 years later. Though he was not a fan of the disc brakes that Ferrari fitted to the GTO. For sporting road work he favoured his 365 P2 Sports Prototype. At 15 miles to the gallon the P2 was a bit more thirsty than the GTO. Being registered on '4 PH' for road use plus RHD and with no roof the P2 made for the more involving experience.

A couple of those photos of 0856 were taken in the paddock and pitlane at Oulton Park; it may well have been the day when Chris Amon drove the car for various magazine articles.

Innes Ireland wrote an article about this meeting for Road and Track. Anyone remember what issue that was? I believe it may have been reprinted in a R&T special issue as well? Thanks, LS |
