I am looking for thoughts on color choice and effect on resale on my new build. I am considering Nuevo Rosso Scuderia on the new Cali and am asking for thoughts on if i will get any if at all of the premium paid back at re-sale. I never see Cali photos with 3 layer paint and am starting to think i am foolish to spend the extra money and should just get Corsa again. I will most likely trade the car in 24 months on a F12 or the Cali replacement.

You're likely to get a host of opinions but here's mine. If you get a "different" color, the effect on resale depends on how "different" it is. For example, a shade of red other than Rosso Corsa may have zero negative effect, and possibly some added effect on resale, while a color like this triple layer lime green 458 spider in the video below, or the lime green California in the below photo, are very polarizing.
The problem with a very different color like lime green is that it will likely appeal to very few people. Those who like it will likely be wild about it and if you find two such persons at the same time, one or the other may even be willing to pay something extra to get it. But a vast majority of others probably won't want to buy it over the large number of other more "mainstream" colored cars on the market it would be competing with. In other words, the number of buyers in the resale market at any given time for that particular color car is likely to be small. As a result, the car may sit unsold for a long time, which usually translates into a lower price, because there is a time value to money, whether it's in the bank or sitting in the form of a Ferrari on a lot. An alternative shade of red, on the other hand, is probably not a worry in the same way. This shade of red may actually become sought after, but the more likely effect is closer to neutral because "acceptable" color choice is only one factor that goes into the mix when someone is in the market for a pre-owned Ferrari. It's like aftermarket parts. They cost a lot to buy at retail and install, but you hardly ever get any value out on resale, and to buyers who would prefer "stock," it could negatively affect resale. Other things affecting whether a car sits or moves are option choices. These usually have less of an effect than color choice unless the color is an extreme departure from what many buy or prefer (such lime green vs. another shade of red). For example, I certainly understand why people might choose to skip options such as cruise control or a backup camera. All of Ferrari's options are over-priced, and if you yourself don't really need or want them, why not skip paying the extra money? But for those intending to use their cars as daily drivers with any kind of freeway driving, or live in an urban environment where they have to parallel park (for those of you in the suburbs foreign to the concept, this means nose-to-tail parking), these are very useful items that could mean eliminating a lot of buyers who otherwise might be interested in your car at resale, especially because a large number of those buyers are likely coming from other luxury makes (BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar, etc.) which have these features standard or otherwise included in popular option packages on their other cars. If you don't have heated seats, you might exclude buyers who might want to drive top-down in colder places. If you don't get the full electric seats, you don't get the seat memory feature, and thus eliminate buyers who share the car (such as husband and wife). All of these choices can have a greater or lesser effect depending on how many buyers think they want or need those options. All this said, you should buy what you like, because this is an expensive car and it will be yours for the time you own and drive it. Worrying about color choice as an effect on resale value is a valid concern, but should not be the tail wagging the dog. FWIW, I think Nuevo Rosso Scuderia is beautiful (shown below on a 599XX). http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=s-OLVMdU2V0 Last edited by Need4Spd; 06-24-2012 at 11:10 AM. |

The 3 layer paint is stunning. I have it in black ( sorry don't know the Ferrari translation color).
You will not recoup the extra cost in resale but honestly you are purchasing an asset that will depreciate, face it. If you want to invest buy Gold, oh that is down, Facebook, ouch not good. I like to invest in pushing the "start" button every morning |

If you are just going to trade it back in.... ASK the dealer. He can tell you if the triple layer or some combo will help or hurt when he takes it back.
Sometimes being different really helps. And, the more beautiful the car, the easier it is to sell. I can tell you that some dealers really warn you about certain colors or combinations and resale. They see what people ask for all the time. They are your best research. That being said, I always feel you should buy what you like and forget resale. What's the point of having a car for two years that you really wish was a different color all that time?

If you want I can upload some photos of california in Rosso Scuderia, It looks stunning. But you should consider this choice because this color is nearly as expensive as matt white.

I imagine this is the "new" Rosso Scuderia right? The normal Rosso Scuderia seems to be a basic colour in the Ferrari range or at least that's what it seems on the configurator.
Stunning colour....and who cares about the a gorgeous girl leaning on it ;-)

I love the new CF racing seats. They are like the 458 now. Mine are colorless and bland.

I was already just to go with Corsa again. Now I am back on the fence after those pictures. I went to the Atelier in Manhattan on Tuesday and saw a Cali in Bianco Italia that was beautiful. They had a FF in Rosso Maranello that looked great too. I think Maranello might be too dark for me on the Cali.

the more i look at these photo's, the more i think they are Rosso Fuoco. I think it is too dark to be Nuevo Rosso Scuderia.

The 3 layers are beautiful...I went to the dealer in May to duplicate the color scheme that is on the Cali 30 video...a 3 layer red with black bi-color...just love that combo and I thought the special paint would really make me feel like I'd bought an entirely new car. The 3 layer was 28k as I recall and the bi-color another 12k. 40k for paint is a lot and was making for a 280ish Cali (versus 224k for my 2010). As much as I loved the Cali 30 I couldn't make sense of that price...too close to the price of the Spider that I decided on.
If you care about trade-in value, my opinion is to keep a Cali under the 250 range. I was very happy with my trade-in (190), but I'm not convinced that another 25-50k of options would have made a significant difference...and the Cali is not getting any younger. |
