the truth about the carbon tax, read it and weep.

From the ABC's "The Drum":

Tony Abbott has consistently said that a Coalition government will end the Carbon Tax. I have believed him.

My belief is being strongly tested by examining the extent of the compensation and handouts being provided by the Department of Climate Change to a large number of industry associations and carbon emitters such as power stations. I don't think that a Coalition government will have the ability to claw the money back.

The great challenger to Rome was Carthage. After the third Punic War the Romans sowed the soil of Carthage with salt so that nothing would ever grow again. Pol Pot's regime did the same thing with land mines. The people living in what was Kampuchea and is now Cambodia are still treading on mines left to wreak a dead and reviled monster dictator's vengeance from the past.

Somewhere in the labyrinth of Treasury and the Department of Climate Change there will be a complete accounting of the money that has been doled out to just about everyone who has asked nicely. I wish that we could find out the full details before the next election. I wonder how much of our brand new Federal Government Debt ceiling of $300 billion will be spent on climate change payouts and subsidies to a motley crew of new and old rent seekers. This is the biggest Australian Government handout I have ever seen. I wonder how much auditing has been done of some of the recipients. It is about 50 years of tariff revenues at their present level.

As long as your hearts are in the right place in the bosom of the Climate Change True Believers, I believe that you will get a handout.

Our Carbon Tax begins on July 1. Where is the Government advertising campaign telling us how the tax will apply? We know about the 320 (used to be 500) polluters. That's like telling us about the two cigarette companies and the two major breweries. To use an old expression "Blind Freddy" would know that the tax paid by the big polluters will flow down as price increases to Australians who want to turn on the lights and be warm in this cold, wet winter of our discontent with the present government.

I suppose that the new tax will flow remorselessly down to the consumer who will moan about the amount of the electricity bill and not notice the increases in many other products and services. Importers will get a price lift that will be pure profit.

On its way downstream to the consumer, the tax will pick up the flotsam and jetsam of accounting charges, the financial cost of the polluters paying first and receiving the revenue return through sales later, and a bit of extra profit margin to make the exercise worthwhile.

Our new manufacturers will also be happy. In the pre-Gough Whitlam days of tariff handouts and the quotas and quota auctions for passenger motor vehicles and textiles, clothing and footwear, the manufacturers never had it so good. This time they are selling fresh air and most of them are still trying to work out how to make the windmills mill.

The great vice of this new tax is that it is hidden except to the cognoscenti and the true believers. Many people are getting dribbles of unexpected money in their bank accounts and have promises of more. They will be very happy about not having to lodge Income Tax returns anymore. There will be a great outcry if a new government reverses that tax decision. Maybe it shouldn't bother. The best approach might be to increase the GST. That's what they have done in Europe with the VAT.

I would like to know how the Senate Estimates Committee is going about its business of ensuring that we at least know how much money has been given to each company and for what. There are some interesting recipients. The Australian Industry Group got close to $2 million from one program. I wonder how their mostly small manufacturer base will benefit from that.

The major Department of Climate Change programs include payments to a lot of Pacific islands. That's nice but when did we agree to do that? I haven't heard of a lot of the other beneficiary associations but that is probably because they are new.

Andrew Murray, a great Democrat from the past and a real true believer in the concept of "keeping the bastards honest," thought that one of his major achievements was getting legislation passed to make government departments disclose how much money has been spent on consultancies. This, of course, has been successfully impeded by providing so much information in so many places that no-one has the motivation or the ability to add up the total for both federal and state consultancy payments to many ex-public servants and a few very large accounting and legal firms.

The disgorgement of largesse by this Government will ultimately result in a government debt of a lot more than $300 billion. There is absolutely no public awareness of just how big the handouts have been and will become, and how many public servants and consultants will be involved in the audit process to measure our increasing climate purity. The bookmakers are saying that Labor will lose at the next election, but maybe Minister Combet was right when he said that the Coalition couldn't untangle the Climate Change legislation. What happens if Abbott has made a promise that he can't keep?

We managed to untangle sales tax and the tariff structure, but they weren't connected to the population in general, and the provision of lighting, cooking and heating. I suppose the Labor trick has been to connect the Carbon Tax to the necessities of life. It's a shame they have forgotten that their purpose is to represent the interests of the majority of the population.

Who put these Idiots in Power?

Gai Brodtmann is the Labor member for the seat of Canberra, no less.

Here she tries to explain who's going to pay for the 3% increased Superannuation Levy.

Presumably an interview she has prepared for and God forbid, voted on.

She's clearly got the Labor 'Spin' down to a tee, but hasn't a clue what it means.

Unfortunately, as amusing as this may be, it's serious. These Idiots are supposed to know what they're doing. Heaven help us.

By the way Gai is the wife of ABC Political Chief Chris Uhlmann.

I think this lady is an excellent example of the commercial acumen of typical Labor politicians.

Having an arts degree, being a union official or an industrial relations lawyer provide the perfect qualifications for running an economy and making decisions that encourage business and employment growth.

Not.

But it's OK, the agenda of Gillard and the Greens is wealth redistribution. They want to make everyone equally poor and so far, they are making excellent progress!

Sad, but completely true. Totally demotivating.

Unfortunately she is my local member, dumb as dog8hit, can't wait for the next Federal election to see the end of the ALP.
Corrupt, incompetent, arrogant, self serving & useless, worst government we've ever had.

Unfortunately getting ALP out might not be as easy as it bloody well should be. All the dumb@rses that are getting handouts, and cannot see the damage they are doing to the country, can still vote.

It is a huge worry. Australia cannot stand too much more of this cr@p. The only people soon to have jobs will be public servants working for the Government on the squillions of unnecessary committees and task forces trying to keep track of their overly complex stupid tax redirecting (back to the companies that the carbon tax is supposed to be taxing ... under the table) systems.

The ALP will be thrown out by a huge majority at the next election.

The incoming Liberal Govt. will soon realise how bad the finances are and will have to make huge cuts to spending/public service etc and raise taxes.

Sound familiar to any Queenslanders?

Seems it's the same when any federal or state Govt. is won by the ALP.

Why don't people learn?

What a friggin' imbecile.

If the employer can't pass on the increased costs to the consumer it will mean they will employ less people and//or cut the hours of the staff they have.

I take it that dumb bints former business didn't do so well

Most people would be horrified to learn how things really are with building industry unions. People in the development world don't speak out because we know we'd be commercially destroyed or worse.

Gillard scrapped the watchdog so her mates could go back to their rackets.

This story got a run in today's Herald Sun. It will be interesting to see if it gathers any momentum.

Just a reminder guys there's still a couple of days left to pre pay your private health cover and still get the 30% rebate before the change on July 1. Some health fund providers are offering up to 18 months prepayment. By then hopefully the coaliltion will be in who have promised to reverse it.
