Ferrari dealers are crazy

I have a 2012 458 Italia with 2,300 miles the salesman called me said I can order a Spider for delivery February 2013 offered me 10% off the sticker for my car and he wanted my Italia now I told him I didn't want the Spider that bad no deal.

10% is probably a lot. You should negotiate. The spider will hold value a lot better than the coupe. You're better off switching out but not at 10%.

I suggest you don't throw this away so easily. Ask how long the guys in LA are waiting...

The dealer is fishing. That doesn't make them crazy. Just toy with the bait and see what you can get.

Your Ferrari dealer is crazy..
FTFY

You should be getting what you paid for it, the car is worth far more than that on the street. I agree, bad deal. And if they want it now. make them pay a premium and negotiate an MSRP price or lower for the spider.

That is funny though... "Hey, we need the car now! But i'm going to give you 10% less than what others can get from their dealers. Deal? No? Come on!!! You'd be doing us a favor!"

The winter?

I negotiated giving up my F430 spider 6 months prior to getting my 458 coupe to get one early. I'm glad I did. Probably saved me 20 grand in resale.

Now, I'm getting a spider earlier than most (probably September). I'm giving up my coupe this week (too hot here in Vegas anyway to enjoy it).

In that time that the car is sitting in your garage this winter, it's just a depreciating asset. The dealer wants it NOW to have a chance to sell it before the winter season starts. Makes perfect sense.

It's your call but aside from the 10% bit, it's not a bad deal to get a spider when they are hard to get.

I was offered much the same price for my 458. Trading any car is always an exercise in "bend over and take it like a man." Mercedes is even worse.

True if you consider the 10% really just a jumping in line fee. many had to do that with california's to get a 458 and that was a much bigger line jumping fee...

im also positive you could work out a deal to drive something on their showroom in the meantime.

For what it's worth, I can confirm that there are people getting what they paid for the car (MSRP) on trade in for a new 458. Similar milleage as you have listed.

Dealers have to eat too. 10% is what $25-30k gross? Plus they have some costs. You will make that up in the lack of future depreciation on the Spider vs the Italia. What else can you drive while you wait?

I want a Spider so I would do the deal. Might be fun to drive a Cali while you wait. Get to know another Fcar inside and out. Not a perfect solution, but I want a Spider.

Ya know guys, you're crazy if you don't think dealers don't look here.... It's an open forum.

When they offer you a deal, sometimes it's better to keep it under your hat.

Got the impression that the OP was somewhat upset thinking that the dealer was taking advantage of him. Not IMVHO. If you want a Spider in the near future it is a good deal. they obviously believe they can sell the subject Italia pretty fast.

I have a great relationship with my dealer and in my mind you have a good opportunity to negotiate something that works for you and the dealer. I'd sure give it a try if it were me. Hope it works out however you want it to in the end.

Wink smooth sailing

A relationship is seldom free; there are always costs involved. Working with your dealer to get an early spider is an opportunity that should not be overlooked.
There are bigger prizes yet to come in the Ferrari lottery and securing a better place in line could be about more than just getting a spider next.
When the sales manager goes through his list the first guy he is going to call next time isn't the guy who balked at the deal he was offered...

IMVHO that isn't a bad deal. If a spider is what you want, you really should jump on this. You would be getting a 2013 Spider which will be worth more than a 2012 coupe in a couple years.

If you plan on keeping the spider for awhile, a 6-7 month wait shouldn't be too painful. Lets be honest, buying a Ferrari (or any new sportscar) is NOT about saving money or getting a good deal. Its about enjoying the car.

Ultimately its your money and your car. Do what you want.

My hunch is that the dealer knows he can sell it for MSRP or a little more and may have a potential customer or two lined up. So the dealer is looking to make 30K or more on your trade, depending on your options. That may be a bit much for the market. If it were me and I wanted a Spider, I would make a counter offer. If I loved my car and was luke warm on a Spider and cold on the the idea of doing without for months, I would pass, as you have.

I was offered 17% off the purchase price of my Cali to get in line for a spider. It had over 4,000 miles and was a 2010 (August 2010 delivery). Based on that comparison I would hope you could negotiate a better deal.

Your dealer isn't crazy. Just not your friend. He will turn around and sell your coupe for $US 30k over sticker (yes, a 2012 coupe with low miles will go for 20-30k over MSRP). I thought coupes would lose luster but they have not. People want them badly. At least here in BH.

I was in the market for Preowned 458 until I discovered the racket. Now I'm just waiting for my slot to open up for the 2013. I ordered a 458 at about 270k MSRP.

But there are guys who can't wait and will pay anything for your 2012. It is upon this desperation that your dealer hopes to capitalize. You are not stupid of course.

Yes. Even more of a premium than I thought. Dealer is entitled to a decent profit from the turnover but 50-60K seems overcooked.
