OK Guys - I was feeling strong enough (and a litttle crazy with the heat) to start on the front bumper and grill conversion on my 84 US QV today. Off came the old US bumper (which I will keep) and shocks as well as the US grill. I have two questions for the experts: 1) How the heck do you screw down the grill to the body? There are 3 tabs on my grill but there is no way I am going to be able to get a screw driver or drill down there to run them in! Do I use hex nut sheet metal screws instead? 2) It seems that the US bumper mounting plates restrict how far back I can get this Euro grill into the recess. I don't think I can mount it as deep as the original Euro cars. Have any of you had the same issue?

I'm going to chill out for a while (this daily radiation poisoning is going to kill me long before any of the little cancer bastards do!) Maybe by tomorrow some of you geniuses can solve my riddles for me so I can get this car back on the road.

    Thanks.

you need to take off the tabs off the old valance.

install them on new grill, with screws.

then match drill the tabs into the new valance.

i will look for one of my threads, i have done this a few times, and will do it again as many of the Qvs i am looking at have the shallow valance, not the deep one i like.

search under valance and not spoiler or grill.

i added 3 small shims to the center post on my grill to get the proper contour. do not over tighten the screws or bolts. there was a gap under the post where the grill horsie mounts. after shimming that everything fit perfectly. i have done this twice so far, a si prefer the deep valance, even on US spec cars.

Thanks, my car was originally a blue/blue car & everytime I see a blue one like yours I wish the previous owner hadn't gone the red route.
Bottom is mounted in original little L-brackets, top is attatched to bumper.

strange you had to cut yours down. my euro qv in the link came with the shallow valance, euro grill, bumper and flash to pass lights, and everything fit. i added the deep euro valence for looks. wonder if its some sort of spacing issue on USA spec cars? extra metal or cross bracing in the front perhaps?

My spoiler is fiberglass so i take it its either from an earlier glass car or an aftermarket part.

If I am looking at this right you had to drill out the original L-brackets and move them to where they would line up with the new Euro bumper, then scrw them in place right? Or did your Euro grill come with the L-tabs on the grill and you used them to mount to the frame? Also did you fabbed some L-brackets to mount the top of the grill to the bumper? Sorry for the dumb questions and thanks for the help.

Thanks for asking, gave me a chance to wake the toy up & drive a little bit.
However I noticed I never finished mounting the lower outer parts of the grill ;-( thanks alot! ;-) I can now add that to my TODO list. Anyway the center lower bolt is a hex head & the top screws are sheetmetal screws.
    Pictures worth a thousand words.
    Bill
ps as I recall I trimmed about 3/4 inch from the center uprights but due to age & beer it really could be anywhere from adding an inch to trimming 3 inches ;-)

no, they are sheet metal if made factory Ferrari. the deep ones are most commonly found in fiberglass, both Ferrari original and aftermarket, but Ferrari did in fact make deep steel valances for the front out of metal.

Bigtex i think has a metal deep one on one of his 3 cars?

the one i took on a euro Qv was hand made original Ferrari out of metal.

i too prefer the glass ones, way lighter and easier to maneuver for drilling than the metal ones!

Very helpful, thanks guys. After watching the 10 min Ferrari video a Fchatter posted this weekend and looking at how each of us has had to modify our Euro grills to fit I am reminded that these were some of the last partially hand-built cars coming out of Maranello. That's half the fun, right?

No, they made them in steel also...

Carreaper and I both have one....mine's shallow.

To the OP, my horns are all in the RH fender, not centrally mounted is that for the later cars???

I was just noting they are keeping it from going in all the way....

The other item is that mine have top mounting brackets, swinging off of "whatever they bolt to...." leaning the whole assembly out further, none of mine came close to the actual bumper to pop rivet to, as one Chatter has posted.

You don't want that connection, if the bumper ever moves...

I think euro has horns on the side and at least US QV's have them in the middle.

At least on my US QV,the impediment to pushing the grill further back is the 2 vertical panels that the bumper shocks are mounted on. They seem to stick out more than the horns or anything else. But I can get the grill back far enough that it looks proper. These cars were semi-hand built and I suspect each frame is a little bit different. I can make this work based on all of the advice you guys have provided.

OK guys, the project is coming along (but not much sleep is happening!) Now my question is: how/where did you mount the flashing/fog lights? From above? Below? Or with an additional metal plate right behind? Thanks.

I made a bracket from 1" flat bar that I anchored to the bumper bracket bolt. It goes over over the top of the fog light & just rests on the fender spoiler joint. I used thin steel & the light vibrates a little like those flashing motorcycle lights, hopefully no one will pull out in front of me again.

Fabricated the brackets and mounted them to the frame. Attached the lights (after a lot of adjusting!) and tightened it all up. Sounds easy but it actually took three nights off and on, but I like the results. I decided to go the "French" route with the yellow Cibie lights just cuz I liked the color with the Blue Sera. Now it is on to the next few projects (after some driving of course) I figure I will tackle the Daniel Stern lighting upgrade next since I have all the parts. Then on to fabricating a center rear valance like the Euro models to partially cover the exhaust. Then it is on to the redye of the leather! Thanks for all the help.
